Front suspension help

First, the ball joints looked like they are riveted on. The manual shows they are bolted on like my replacements. What to do? Second, I'm trying to get the front shock loose from the top mount and the book says to use a spanner to hold it from turning. Can I use something else and where am I suppose to hold the rod with the spanner? Where and what kind of spanner wrench to get? Last, my front springs are gold, bronze colored; are these factory and I guess I should replace them anyway, as no telling how old they are?

Thanks for your help.

Drill out the ball joints.

You can clamp the shocks with vicegrips through the spring with padding as to protect the shock.

The springs could just be painted stock ones. Unless your car is drooping or had very bad ride quality, you probably don't need to replace them.
