Thanks for the kind offer Paul. Right now my concern is the gas smell. PO informs me that the car has a new exhaust and it hasn't been driven much over the last 5 years. I'd even like to bring it up, or you can come down (I'll compensate you), so I can have someone assist me in properly evaluating it.

BTW, I really admire your work! Your burgundy car, amongst a few others others, is in my '02 Project Book as a standard. I'd love to come up and meet you and check out your other projects.

Heck, I still haven't driven one! - and yes, it's high on my list.

Cheers,

Marc

Gas smell? From under the hood or the trunk?

Aren't they SUPPOSED to do that??

OK..the seal on the tank in the trunk can deteriorate and leak. Mine does it only when it's full and splashes up.

Lift the cover in the trunk and jostle the car to make the gas splash around.

Is that it?

Look at all of the cloth fuel lines....they get nasty and leak also.

Haven't touched 'er in months. Now that I've freed up some $$$ I'll start ordering parts (fuel cell filler neck, seat brace for roll cage, cleaning supplies, racing suit, Hans device, gloves, shoes, white paint for the interior, etc etc..

It's going to be parked in my apartment's parking garage for a while...my neighbors will be *thrilled* I'm sure! (not!) Bringing in home on Saturday.

My goal is to have it race ready, reliable, safe, and a little prettier for the 2010 ITB season.

marc,

IIRC there was discussion in the past about "fumes" and the lack of the proper hood, wing, and deck lid seals. do you really have a leak or just too much "ventilation"?

be intense about checking for any fuel leaks! i, usually, double clamp fuel hose connections from a hard line to a soft line, too.

HTH. i ain't no muhcanik.

Paul Wegweiser ROCKS!

Put a car cover on it - greatly reduces the likelihood anyone will mess with it.

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

    The BMW 2002 Production Run

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
