Are all mass air sensors the same???

Okay, I have located a good m20 motor for my swap project but I am lacking a mass air sensor. I have found a few but I am foggy on what will work. Some people say they will work with all, other say will work with e or i respectively and some say they will only work from 84-88 or 89-91. I can guess that I need to stick with one from an "i" motor since mine is a 91'"i" but I wasn't sure about the years... Anyone know??

Get the book "Bosch Fuel Injection and Engine Management Systems" by Charles Probst. Amazon has it, and you can find it in better auto stores, Borders, etc. Good information is absolutely invaluable.

There are likely to be slight variations in the air mass meters, even if you are looking only at L-Jet systems on BMWs. The big differences are between the 'mechanical' variety, found on many BMWs, and the 'hot wire' variety found on other Bosch systems.
