Maybe it's just me, but I find this thread infinitely more interesting when the posts include:

1.) the BMW Archives data on the car (available for free if you simply email your VIN to info.grouparchiv@bmwgroup.com); and

2.) a current photo (or a past photo with an approximate date).

Here's my '73:

Dear Mr Cappel,

Thank you for your email.

The BMW 2002 tii US VIN 2762757 was manufactured on October 19th, 1972 and delivered on October 24th, 1972 to the BMW importer Hoffman Motors Corp. in New York City. The original colour was Inka, paint code 022.

We hope this information is helpful for you.

Yours sincerely,

Julia Oberndörfer

BMW Group Archiv

The photo I've chosen belle best sums up, to me, my '73's history to date (including factory color, bad re-paint, peeling of bad re-paint, reversed rear reflectors, incorrect red-center taillights, etc.)!

Regards,

Steve

I am regularly in GA on business so I will try to wander back over to Braselton.

Sorry to be checking in late...

2764073 present and accounted for!

From driver's door sticker MFG date is 5/73 and I'll email BMW archives to get the full data.  From BMW archives:

"The BMW 2002 tii US VIN 2764073 was manufactured on May 29th, 1973 and delivered on June 04th, 1973 to the BMW importer Hoffman Motors Corp. in New York City. The original colour was Colorado, paint code 002."

Must have rolled off the line a few days (hours?) before Larry's and Jim's.

Color is Colorado - Factory paint still on the car.  Needs both front fenders and doors or a patch/fix to the bottom rot..along with full mechanical assessment...

Pics of top of dealer sticker and last fall outside the garage are pasted below.

Note to those with eagle eyes:  I have two full sets of wheels: bottle caps and non factory mags from the 70s.

Per Andreas Hart:

The BMW 2002 tii US VIN 2764084 was manufactured on June 1st, 1973 and delivered on June
6th, 1973 to the BMW importer Hoffman Motors Corp. in New York City. The original colour was
Malaga, paint code 021.

Saddle interior. Sunroof. Life is good!

LOL - my car (4081) must have been made late in the day on 5/30. Wonder where the other ones ended up (4082 and 4083)?

Long time lurker, first time poster.

2782852 mfg11/74 per the door.

Getting it running is going to be the Spring project.

Pretty much stock - including date stamped steel wheels. I did have it repainted about 2 years before it got "retired". It also has an eibach spring kit and Bilstein Sports ( the original springs are in the garages with the new seat pads).

The BMW 2002 tii US VIN 2761064 was manufactured on February 7th, 1972 and delivered on February 15th, 1972 to the BMW importer Hoffman Motors Corp. in New York City. The original colour was Agave, paint code 071.

It spent the first 42 years in Marin County and now resides in San Mateo County. Hopefully, I can get her back on the road later this year assuming I stop worrying about zinc plating and powder coating...

post-34981-0-74108100-1455045077_thumb.pHere is a mash up of the Macartney book data - the first and last car made for model years and series (which I put in bold), and the vins from this thread.  I was interested to see how many tiis BMW was making at various times.  My "Running Total" column attempts to show that.  It is a total from the last bolded number.

If we had more production dates, we could really hone in on how many cars were made in a given month or even week.  Now you can look at the running total and get a feel for it, but more data would make it a lot better.  Again, bold info is from the Macartney book.

And, Scott, as others (Mike S.) have noted, 2762630 was the first U.S. 1973 model tii. I'm guessing it was an early September 1972 car. It was for sale some time back. Verona car.

Thanks and regards,

Steven

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
