nice work  steve, as my car #2762497 is all original down to the color and drive train it fits in the rare e12 versions   Bruce Mtuner

Thanks, Bruce, although I’m standing on the shoulders of members such as Paul Wegweiser and Rob Torres, who identified and shared the VIN’s at which the changes occurred!

Best regards,

Steve

I think that's the closest to my car, so far.  5 cars younger.

Really nice.

That’s cool. We should plan a reunion!  There was just one on eBay about 11 cars away.

Oh, oh, I just had an idea!

If everyone entered their car, with manufacturing date and original color, in this forum’s obscenely-easy-to-use Registry, we could all be amazed by the number of “sister cars” — cars that were produced the same day — out there!

Yes! My best idea ever! A gold star for conserv!

Thanks and best regards,

Steve

Thanks, Ed,

I’m liking what I’m seeing!

My records are showing both VIN 2760956 and VIN 2760960 as manufactured on February 1, 1972, so I’m going to make a wild-ass guess that VIN 2760958 was manufactured... February 1, 1972. This is no reason to not get a free BMW Group Archives report, but it does take a little suspense out of the wait... ?

Best regards,

Steve

And looks it, Brad!

Like COOP’s former Baikal ‘72 tii (Sahara to Baikal), I suspect the premium associated with a snazzier color — when done in a comprehensive and quality manner — outweighs any detriment attributable to a color change...

(I assume I’m about to be flamed by every Sahara fan, but I’m a former owner of a ‘67 Sahara 1600-2 and I can’t recall ever using the term “snazzy” to describe it! ?)

Below, my old 1600-2 and Brad’s tii.

Best regards,

I’m a big Verona fan. My firm criteria was matching numbers and no snorkel. Sahara looks great on short bumper cars with some steelies, euro signals and lowering springs in my opinion. Very understated.

.... I also have information of the block, currently in my car, but is not original to my car:

The BMW 2002 tii US VIN 2762988 was manufactured on November 08th, 1972 and delivered on November 10th, 1972 to the BMW importer Hoffman Motors Corp. in New York City. The original colour was Colorado, paint code 002.

The color of my tii is Colorado, so it’s a nice coincidence that the engine block is also from a Colorado tii.

Hmm.... Tony, do you know that forum member HENRYNBMW owns chassis VIN 2762988?

And, Henry, do you know that forum member Ensign owns engine number 2762988?

If neither of you knew this, how about them apples? The power of the forum Registry! ?

Best regards,

Steve

I bought 2762669 from a South Bay guy back in January. Have been driving and enjoying. Taking back to stock as much as possible. It had an earlier 71 tii engine, 2760341, installed, which I knew had issues when I bought it. Original block came with the car, am rebuilding it now.  Pulled the 71 engine two weeks ago, found #3 had lots o' crunchy rings and some bore damage but still, I put probably 1000 fast miles on it since I bought it. A testament.

Have painted the primer areas and trunk lid, spray-can job, but at least it all attempts to be Ceylon Metallic now. Once back on the road will get serious re a paint job.  E21 seats and aftermarket steering wheel are gone, stock stuff in place. Sorted diff and all electrical jury-rigs, of which there were a number.

I've got four Alfas but have had many BMWs (my wife has an E90 M3) and my cousin Derek is one of the Bay Area 02 group swap n show organizers, he has a 69 02. So all in the family.  Happy to talk if anyone has 2760341 and is looking for the block.

Mike, didn't we see that go away on a truck on the way to the new owner, when in Pittsburgh?

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,
