I installed my new head with a schrick 292 and mikuni 40phh. While starting the motor for the first time and tuning the carbs, the engine overheated. I was getting ready to retorque the head and noticed oil in the water and water in the oil..

Is this because I hadn't retorqued the head sooner?

Will retorquing the head help or will I need to replace the head gasket?

If you've got it mixing, I'd take the head off and give the setup a good inspection. Make sure the head is flat, no crud on it, the head bolt holes are clean, etc., and use a new gasket.

When you torque your head down they crush. After that then they can not be used again under any reason. Install a new one. A nice cutting ring tii gasket should work fine. Note. Make sure the block surface and the head surface are clean.. clean clean. no lumps of old gasket or gasket pattern. you should see nothing but metal. That will assure you're clean. Change the oil as well. DO NOT drive it on milkshake oil.
