you need to observe very carefully how things come apart--and they will do so with great force. The retractor spring has to be rewound backwards from its natural coil and it takes strong fingers and a great deal of patience to get it rewound without it making a break for freedom. But it can be done.

However, don't expect the belt to retract like a new one when you're finished--and don't forget to put just a little white grease on the belt spool so it will turn smoothly.

Good luck--it's worth trying on one just for the experience (and to learn patience!)

may be repairable...it consists of a pendulum that swings freely in a small chamber. If the pendulum swings off center (as in a panic stop) it engages a rachet tooth on the drum that holds the belt, thus locking it up.

Sometimes all that's wrong with the mechanism is that the housing isn't mounted perfectly vertical. The other problem is a sticky or stuck pendulum. If you don't have to dismantle the spring portion (make sure you don't open the side of the housing that has the spring!) fixing/swapping the pendulum assy is fairly easy.
