Yokohama AVID T4 versus Sumitomo HTR 200

I have put the Avid T4s on a bunch of my street cars and really liked them. I just got some Sumitomo HTR 200s for my track day Fiat 128 and while I have not driven the car on the track yet I'm surprised Tire Rack rates them as a performance tire. They ride nice and soft and make the steering squishy. Bottom line is I would go with the Avids. I have not had either on the 2002. Lot of the Fiat guys go with the Simitomos since we all have 13" wheels and there is not much out there in that wheel size.

I believe that the tire manufacturer decides whether a tire is an all-season, a summer performance tire, etc., not Tire Rack.

How do the sidewalls on the T4's compare? Stiffer?

Any idea which tire has more actual grip, in same / similar sizes?

Hello....

I have two 2002's. One running 185/70-13 Yokohama Avid T4s and the other running Sumitomo 195/55-15 HTRs. I like the handling of both tires but I have to say that after 18 months and about 20,000 miles the HTR's are cracking on the sidewalls like dryrot. The Avid T4's are still great after around 5000 miles and 2 years.

I'll buy the Avid T4's again. Not the HTR's.

We have 185/70-13 T4s on our 1600 and I like them well enough. I don't mean to damn them with faint praise, but I wish there was a better alternative at that size. I didn't want to go wider for the Sumis.

I had both Avid V4s (basically the same as T4s, but V rated) and Sumi HTRs on our '87 535is and while the Sumis had a stiffer side wall, were more responsive in L to R transitions, and had a harder rubber compound that tended to maintain better grip when warm, the Avids were much better in the wet. The Avids lasted a bit longer as well on a car with lots of torque and negative camber that tended to burn up rear tires.

Edit: also, I saw on another forum that Tire Rack is having a clearance sale on the Avid T4. Not sure if that means they'll be discontinued after that if it matters...

Coker Tire to ask why they don't (and when they will) bring some 13" moderate performance tires into their vintage tire catalog.

Pointed out in the e-mail that there are quite a few small cars from the late 50's, 60's and 70's that originally ran on 13's that have become collectable over the past few years (BMWs, Corvairs, Fiats, small Brit sports cars and sedans, Pintos, Vegas, Falcons, etc), and suggested that they might consider acquiring molds from companies like Bridgestone & Michelin before the molds for tires like the old Bridgestone RE900 are disposed of altogether.

Got back a very pleasant e-mail from one of their "vintage tire specialists" saying that he'd referred the e-mail to their r&d folks and that they hadn't really considered the possible demand for 13" tires.

Bottom line? Can't hurt to shoot an e-mail to Coker Tire and Vintage Tire to let them know that there's a definate demand for decent 13" tires in "performance all season" tread patterns and compounds at reasonable prices .

I've had both. 185/70/13 with the T4s and 185/60/14 with the Sumitomo HTR 200s -- both on 2002s. (I also had the Sumi's in 195/50/15 on my 91 Sentra SE-R.) The tires are both as advertised by their manufacturers. The T4's are a low-buck all season touring performance tire and the Sumitomos are a low-buck high performance tire.

Unless you're driving in snow, I prefer the Sumitomos. They do have soft sidewalls. They also may require A LOT of air. (IIRC, I ran as much as 52 PSI in the front of my Sentra for autocross, although I'm sure that's an extreme case. On the other hand, I think a lot of folks overlook the fact that these tires need a lot of air to perform as intended.)
