cranking over weird, tough spot to turn over each revolution

Well i'm just getting my car running again, it is doing fine, just needs some adjustments here and there.

One thing that IS bugging me though, is when I crank it over, it seems to have a spot where it takes some effort to turn over, and then when it gets past it, it rolls over fine, but then back at that spot again it does it again (seems like there is some more resistance)

Any idea what this could be? The car had been sitting for a bit (1.5 years), do you think one of the piston rings was a little stuck and then got bent up? Or could my starter motor be needing replacing? I'm hoping its not something internal to the engine that is causing it. I just don't want to take it to a place that doesn't really know and get charged $200 for them to scratch their heads.

Spins over fine with the plugs out...so, weak starter? Timing too far advanced?

Could be either one, but seems more like timing. This is a four cycle motor, so it only fires every 4 rotations. If it fires too early, the motor is pushing against that compression stroke, rather then following it down. Does that sound about right, timing wise? Also, if you have a weak starter (or battery), the normal effect will be exaggerated (i.e., the starter will not have the power to maintain torque against the compression stroke). Or, some combination of the two.

note: the cylinder fires, the piston tries to go up, the "fire" happens too soon, the piston fights the compression, hence the weak turn over (slow or uneven) RETARD the timing and report back when it fires right up!!!!

For some applications, having a bit of advance at start is a good thing. A weak starting system will protest against this. In that case, the solution is to improve the starter, not retard the timing.

While I agree that the timing is the culprit

(might be stuck centrifugal advance...)

it's worth doing a quickie compression test.

Yeah, it's not a great engine metric, but

it'd find a bent valve or other sealing problem...

"a bit" of advance is a necessary thing (25* BTDC @ 1400 lining up the ball), too much will cause the condition described as uneven turn over. My guess is the valves are fine, everything is sealing, the compression is good, and he just needs to get the timing retarded a little and fire it up. If he wants a new starter here's a good excuse, but it's not the problem. If you decide to do it go for the S14 unit and have fun.
