over heating 2002 1972

Hi my 2002 1972 has a new thermostat and its starting to overheat again this has not ever happened in 5 years of daily driving and im getting depressed can any one help me DESMAN

There is a host of things to look for.

Are you sure you're overheating? A bad dash ground can skew the reading on the cluster. An infrared sensor aimed at various components can help verify. Barring that, a thermometer inserted into the fill of the radiator can also give you a better idea, but you must be VERY careful not to burn yourself.

If you're overheating, it's time to troubleshoot. If your ignition timing is too advanced, the car will run lean and start to heat up. When was the last time you checked your timing?

When the car is hot, verify all hoses off the thermostat housing are also hot and pressurized. If not, your water pump may be to blame. If they are hot and firm, work your way around- does the radiator have any cold spots that indicate blockages?

There are many other things to look for, but these are a couple of simple and free tests you can do in the meantime.

yeah, the first thing is finding out if youre really overheating. Turn on the heater while your engine is running. How hot is the air blowing through the vents? If the air is medium warm then your engine temp is probably in the safe zone. If the air blows really hot, then you're overheating.

Once you'ver determined if its an instrumentation error or a cooling system error, follow the suggestions of previous poster. Without burning yourself, open the radiator and make sure coolant is flowing while the engine is at operating temp. You can see turbulance in the top of the radiator if the theremostat has opened, the pump is operating and / or the hoses are unblocked. My car has dual circuits for cooling and when the thermostat opens both systems flow the coolant. If necessary, remove your thermostat and put in boiling water, make sure the internal valve opens, and opens sufficiently for passage of coolant. At the same time look for obstructed hoses.

The other fork in the road is a sensor, ground or capacitive link in your

instruments. The temp guage is old fashioned analog meter with a very sensitive movement. If the ground is faulty, it can float intermittantly. You have to determine if the reading is an actual indication of water temp at the sensor position in the water jacket, or if it is floating due to the oxidation of wires, or poor grounding.

If you find that there is an accumulation of static on your temp sensor you can try bypassing it with a 1000pf Mica capacitor. While you're in there you can do the fuel tank indicator since it is succeptable.

1. Make sure you don't have an air bubble in the system. Sometimes they work out by themselves; other times you have to burp 'em. One of the places an air bubble will form is behind the thermostat, which will delay or even prevent its opening, thus causing an overheating situation. GINGERLY check the lower radiator hose below the 'stat with the engine warmed up. It should be as hot as the hose above the 'stat. If not...you may have an air bubble there, or (see below)....

2. 'stats have been known to be inoperative right out of the box...so make sure it's actually opening. If you find the above situation and it's not an air bubble , you may have to remove the 'stat, suspend it on a string in a pan of water with a thermometer, and see at what point it opens. Specs are in the shop manual.

And...I presume the radiator is clean and in good condition.
