engine temp gauge question

Ok, My 71 2002 stock runs a little above 3'clock on the gauge. Driving yesterday to the fireworks show, I noticed the gauge at usual normal, and I keep an eye on that gauge when driving to protect the head. The needle on the gauge started hopping around going toward the high side, (near red) and then seconds later showed correct at near normal for my car. it continued to do this frequently.

Is this a sending unit issue? An electrical gremlin(from amc)? A sticking thermostat?

Any opinions, guesses or suggestion?

I'd say oxidised connection in the cluster, and or freaky wire to the temp

Freaky wire just requires you to open the hood.

Oxidised cluster is caused by the moisture trapped (leaking windshield

and water entering thru holes in yer floor) in the interior.

Remove the cluster and clean shinnyclean all electrical contact points including the gang plug on the back of the cluster.
