Dumb alternator question

I have a high amp alternator I got at a local junkyard. When I start my 02 it turns on just fine, but when I disconnect the battery (with the car running) the car will just die. Is this normal or is the car supposed to stay on? The "L" charging light has not turned on. I'm trying to trouble shoot before I spend some $$$ for a remanufactured alternator. I've had this alternator on my 02 for about 4 months. And this has been happening within the last couple of weeks. I does drain the battery when the car is running. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

It's not a good idea to remove the cable off the battery while the engine is running to check the charging circuit. This can damage the alternator. This is mentioned in the instruction booklet included with the Bosch alternators. Lesson learned from my VW (Bosch AL-82X).

Also, make sure the "battery" indicating light bulb in the dash works. Just like on the VW, if it doesn't work, the charging circuit won't.
