E21 starter compatability?

My dad's E21 starter is shot, and as I have a spare starter on an engine that came with my '72 I was wondering if it would fit/work?

From my understanding is that starter catches the flywheels and cranks that over, correct? Are the flywheels different from a '72 2002 and a 1983 320i?

Thanks - Andrew Poon

Yes, any M10 Starter will work. And so will the 6 cyl version. If you take the time to search the archives, you will find the same answer and more. Should you opt for using any used starter, consider examining the teeth on the bendix drive for wear. If the teeth are excessively worn, you may find yourself with another problem entirely.
