yup, elbow grease. thats it.

What i do IS a restoration. Taking a new a like shell and putting all new parts on it is just an exersice of showing that you have deep pockets...i do not btw.

So today i fitted the ?%$?@#? bumpers.

It is just the pre-test fit so i know if it gona be ok or not...i like the overriders-less look.

Hey, who is looking at me up front...yeah, my white 02 of course...

Update, i didnt touched the car for the last month or so....my gf is pregnant...

i found some time this weekend and finished up the front nose and the slots for the bumper brakets.

i also poured some build-up primer on the trunk lid. all blocked down and straight.

i also seam sealed all the joints of my fixes on the floor pans. aouf.

sorry, no pictures yet. The plan is to have the car painted before the snow gets in.

wish me luck...

since i will not finish it before the winter, i decided to get the motor out, so i can get it into my home basement next to the stove and clean it with a tooth brush during the winter ;)

i was not expecting to see the flywheel aka flexplate for automatic, to be like that...there is still quite a heavy mass...that sure helps a smooth idle

;)

i will open that litle monster and ultimately rebuild it the best i can...i have 8 motors to pick up parts from and tons of gasket sets, rings,...

Oh poor litle engine, even if it was under a "running" condition, i didnt ran with the carso i was not able to "tell". The block is probably only good for a boat anchor, two cylinders are rusted and pitted beyond logic.

The crank has serious play as well, and the piston ring land is over the spec.

Soooo, i will slap in one of my 1.8 block, but with 2.0 internals and fresh new pistons that i bought from e-bay.

Test fitting the crank to see if it is a reground or not. This is a e21 2.0 crank with superb journals...

The block has super clean bores, pictured is after a light honing.

Yes i know it is very dirty. Gona get cleaned and painted flat black soon.

Since its a 1.8 block, some details needs care.

1-the passenger engine mount holes are not used on the 1.8, so the holes get filled with crap all the time.

I taped them and cleaned them carefully.

2-the 1.8 oil pump tube is a lot shorter than the one on the 2002, so the #3 bearing cap need to have this braket imported from a 2002 block to hold the end of the oil pick-up tube. Taken from the old engine, totaly bolt-on and transportable from one engine to one other.

Some pictures of the piston that i bought on e-bay.

I never thought in my life that i could find nos pistons, and that i actualy bought them !! Just the box worth staring at...thoses pistons are the period correct configuration/compression ratio for the rest of the set-up (carb, erg,...)

also, i unpacked my other purchase, early steelies. Theses will complement the old school look that i want.

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

    The BMW 2002 Production Run

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
