1974 automatic 4280905. FINISHED

So, i acquired this 2002 for darn cheap, the towing actualy costed me more...

41 000 original miles on it, last 10 years barned, so it has been used as a mouse house, a lot. I think nothing smell that bad.

The shell is very strong, it is much more better than my actual white turbo clone, so i may end up with somethig nice with it.

It needs several misc. parts as the PO did take it all apart, for an abscure reason.

For now, it needs two new fenders, which i have (fiberglass), a hood, which i have too.

The engine was apparently seazed, but after messing up with a big ratchet it started to rotate fairly easy, without any bad noises or so.

Then as today, 18-11-07, i managed to hook-up a battery and it cranked !!!!!

jeeez, i was not expecting much. Too bad it dont have a distributor (why ?) i am sure this baby would have started.

Its nice to hear an engine cranking on a car thats been sitting for so long, it tells me "hey, get me back to life " !!!!

some pictures as i got it, bare.

so far, here is what it costed me:

230$.

value of fun i already have: priceless.

my home basement if full of 02 stock, this project brought up some more, but there is still some missing to do this project...thanks PO.

i discovered that i was able to lift the rear end of this car with my bare arms, so ive been able to toss it away in my driveway...i didnt thought a bare 02 shell was so light.

As i unseized the engine yesterday, i may try to start it up and see how the trany goes.

The PO mocked up the entire wire system, i already found a donor wiring for very cheap (thanks Ian).

Funny, there is a lot of things unique to automatic 02, or at least if a first for me...the carbon canister is on the passenger side, low mounted, the vaccum tube that goes over the front of the valve cover goes there, i seached for very long until i found its usage ;)

exhaust down pipe is unique to auto's as well.

I will post pictures of me doing a donut in the snow soon ;)

Right now i didnt bought anything.

I found a period correct dizzy for it, and rebuilded it all with just my nos stock.

found a correct coild, KW 12v and a ballast resistor, a thermostat and all the steering linkages, in very good condition.

it is very close now to run and go !!

I found out the keys under what remains of the carpet, all rotten...i washed them with CLR and they came back to life, all shiney !

i also showing one of the red interior panel, it looks like realy well made. Too bad the PO trashed one of the front seats !!

Dude, your frame rails look great compared to the car I drive every day.

I think it's time to put my car in the garage and start the inevitable resto project.

yeah, i was stumped when i saw the frame rail and floor condition. neato perfect, although there is some surface spots rust, but nothing compared to my actual turbo clone...and the guy wanted to throw it to the metal recycler, not even a scrap yard...aouch !!!

its the only reason why i want to resurect this car. IT IS solid, even if it looks real real sad.

I decided to give a try on my ugly center console.

I primed it with high build primer and painted it with a chrome alike rattle can. I think it it better than nothing.

then i will put a p-r-o-a-2-l sticker since its not there anymore...

thanks po again.

I also clened few other parts and painted them...worm, rear licene plate holder, coil and coil braket.

I have too much time on my hand...

I bought "some" other parts

-carpet, full one piece set, complete and good

-door windows

-center resonator, bosal, oem fit, used but nice

-rear muffler, bosal, oem fit, used but nice

-door panels and rear panels

-seat belts

350$

total investment:

766$

i have ALMOST everything, all that is missing now is a rear seat, one rear seat belt receiver and front slide rails for seat and the lower center console "raised" . I located omst of these parts localy from a nice guy who restores BMW's. He might also get me a complete black seat set, both front and rear...the tan ones looks a bit funky with a sahara exterior.

I believe the car will cost me 1k, then i will do the body job myself as usual, maybe 500$ worth of material max for the paint job. I may send the shell to have it sand blasted, i dont know...

pictures to come...

  • 1 month later...

Today was a very nice day, warm and sunny.

Nice for a 29th december.

I decided to give a try on this puppy. I installed a dizzy, a coil and a fresh carb. I left all the original wiring on the car not connected and made my own one, temporary...+12v to the coil, +12v to the carb solenoid and the - from the dizzy to the coil.

Guess what, it started !!!

This engine purrs like a kitten. No bad noises at all. NO bad fumes either...

No knock, no valves noises, nothing, just like if it were freshly rebuild...i was laughing very loud alone !!!

It start under 1/4 of turn !!

that was a good one.

The picture of the black snow is the proof...

I have almost everything to say that it gona be 100% complete...under dash panels, an antenna and its almost it, i have all the rest.

Next step is to reinstal some half shafts and figure the condition of the auto trany...i will not bet on this, i will not be surprised to do a donut in my driveway soon ;)

  • 2 weeks later...

A litle update...i am still runing into troubles finding the correct center console for this car, as it seems that there is defenitively two model of automatic shifter for 02's.

AS per today, 12 january of 2008, i managed to reinstal some half shaft on the car, worked out the inoperative shifter mecanism, and did try the transmission for the first time.

Guess what, it works !! it shift smooth, no noises or whatseover. Just nice and perfect....

id like to remind anyone who read this that this car was going to the crusher...

so some body work/metal fab and interior cosmetic, and i will be gone...until i find a way to plate it, which seems to be more complicated than i tought, since the serial number is not "regular" so it is not into the canadian files at all...

so they want me to have the car pass a full inspection and then they will run some sort of carfax for it...hey stu, will i spend money in a car that i dont even know if it is under a "stolen" status ???

like the egg and the chicken...

thats gona be another problem...

update, i finaly got a complete pedigre of the car owners.

Car i STILL plated into ontario, under "running condition"...lol

last time it was plated is in 1992...16 years form then...

i got all the names of the po's, they are all in Ontario. All womens !!

Car was never plated in Quebec i beleive, as it is not present into any archives, saaq, rdprm,...

i will work out a failure into our government immatriculation system to have it back on the road...otherwise it will be complicated...

so by now, project is on hold as i cant find the last known user.

so far all i know is its name and that he lives in ontario (if he still lives)...

so that makes me run into big big problems to be able to register the car here in Quebec...

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,
