Distibutor differences??

02 distributors are hardly infinite, but every time I look under another 02 hood, there seems to be another distributor number or type. In-law brought me a trashed E21 cylinder head from a 76 to see if I could use any parts. The distributor body appears to be cast iron (heavy and rusty) as opposed to some type of aluminium. It bears an oval Bosch tag: 0231 115 048 "JFUR4" NOT "IFUR4". It is interesting (to me) the vacuum advance is easily disassembled so that springs and shims/washers can be added/subtracted to alter its functional range.

This distributor is not an IFUR4 - unk, JF4D4- 1600, IFR4 2002TI, IFDR42002Tii. But it clearly works in an 02. Any idea from what model/year this distributor originally belongs?

While on the subject, can someone explain the letter designation used by Bosch? I expect its just like Bosch's spark plugs, but have never seen a similar chart.

Here's another distributor body identified as "JFUD4" which I think came from an 02 automatic. 0 231 168 023 I know someone posted a chart with numbers, but I am at a momentary loss to find it. If I can locate it again, I will repost it.

THE ORANGE BMW Owner's handbook in your glovebox,

and factory Blue Binder Repair Manual

contain all the Bosch numbers and

distributor code numbers, advance curve

charts.

all the Bosch distributor numbers begin in "J", as follows:

JFUR 4 = 1602/1802/2002 (vacuum advance)

JFR 4 = 2002 Tii

JFUD 4 = 2002 Automatic (vacuum retard)

I think if you really clean the side of your dist. you'll see "J" instead of "I"

Good tip.

Often wondered about these letters and numbers, but since we typically do not change distributors as often as sparkplugs, hasn't really mattered.

Unfortunately a few of us may only have materials relating to 1600's and without the luxury of an orange manual in the glove box! I have not consulted my glove box library in years, but think my manual may be beige. Is this information available on the internet?

I think you misread my post, because the oval tag says: "J" as I indicated. The reason for the differentiation, is my quick reference source: Haynes.

CD, when you are right, you are right. Haynes Auto repair manual © 1987, Page 66 "Chapter 4 Ignition system" lists 3 separate distributors bearing an "I" rather than a "J". Guess these must be typos. :(

Now that you mention it, we once had a North American 74Tii that I think had an advance and a retard vacuum pot, rather than the more typical full mechanical advance. Car is long gone along with paperwork, so I can not check distributor number.

I Googled Bosch Distributor 0231 115 048 jfur4 and it showes that dizzy was fitted to 1602/1802s it also showes a nice advance curve and gives spec's for vacuum and centrifical advance.

I have a 1976 2002 manual and I noticed that my distributor numbers are not mentioned....?

 

All the following were listed above:

So, what do I have?  JFU4

Can't seem to find much about it.  It has a vacuum advance.  

 

Is this stock to the 1976 2002

Yes.  I believe so.

I bought one from a fellow FAQer, to replace the 002 that a PO had put on my car (76).

I took it apart and used a shim kit to take the vertical play out of the shaft and cleaned and lubed all the internal bits.

It seems to be working very well now.

 

Do you have a timing light with the adjustable advance feature?

You could plot the curve and see how yours is behaving.

 

Is the BB steady under the timing light, or does it bounce around?

I now disagree with some of the timing advice I have given in the past.  I misinterpreted the distributor curves in the Blue Book. 

I've switched from using ported-vacuum to manifold, with better results. 

I apologize for spreading misinformation.

I agree. This JFU 4 is original to my '76 (VIN 2742541, April 23, 1976). The car is a 49-state version. I don't know if the CA versions used the same distributor for '76.
