1974 BMW 2002 Rally Project

So my Sahara 2002 has been for sale for $400 bucks (runs and drives just needs a front main seal). for about 2 months. Seeing that this car is worth nothing to anybody.... I've decided to mutilate it.

Soon to have the most redneck, ghetto riged, cheap suspension I can create with a welder and a junkyard. I'm planing on raising the ride height by 3 inches all around. The plan is to keep the drivetrain/steering suspension geometry the same , just lengthen a few things and make it sit further away from the frame. Then the addition of 15'' mud tires in the rear with LSD and 15'' tires in the front. I'm then planing on mounting my collection of Harbor friehgt fog lights I just got on sale (5.99 for two) (i got 12 sets) 4 on the front bumper, the roof (4 facing front 2 facing sides 2 facing rear) . And then to top it off, my winch off my atv (2000lb, yeah I know its not enough, but believe it or not I've pulled a stuck 4 runner out with it and its free so it will do). Finally skid plates under everything, 1/2 '' thick steal in the front under the engine/transmission so I can ram shit and slide over it. and some skids near the rear diff. The entire interior will be riped to peices, only a steeringwheel, shifter, tach, oil press, volt, temp gauge will remain. Due to low exhaust clearance I will run a mandrel bent U tube into a muffler threw the hood, thats right a muffler sticking threw the hood like a tractor. I think that will anger my neighbors with their brand new mercedes and M3, he said he loves my car and had one in highschool (he wants me to restore it).

Nice!!!!!!!!!! Anyone else got any pictures of my idea?

The tires in the back of that 02 look too narrow imo. I will be retaining most of my front fenders, they will be cut though, like the rear. My roof rack will be bigger. Also the front of that is just lower apron with no front bumper. I will have a large 1/2'' steel skidplate going up to where the bumper is and I will retain the bumper for extra support on the plate and a place to put lights. I'm debating on cuting the roof off since I will have a roll cage anyways.

um.....have you ever held a 1ftx1ft sqare steel plate?

hope you are joking.

do you any idea how MUCH that would weigh? you would bearly be able to move the car. Unless you want to make it bullet proof you do not need 1/2"plate!!

3/16 alum. should be strong enough to stop most impacts you will encounter. This is what my friends subaru rally car uses.

do you any idea how MUCH that would weigh?

haha... Pedro the first thing I thought of was those big-ass metal plates they use to cover holes in the road at construction sites...

1'x1'x1/2" is like welding a sewer cap to your oil pan! LOL

I think that 1/4" would be the max if you litterally plan on driving into rocks & stumps, if not 1/8" & 3/16 will be plenty of protection - it's more about the angle of the plate than the plate itself in some cases (not all). Aluminum would save you probably three times the weight of the steel too...

IMO - Cage it & drive it - chopping off the roof is asking to fold that car in half unless you seam weld & gusset the sh*t out of it. Also before you think about 33" Micky Thompson's take a look at the clearance up front - you'll need about 6" of solid lift to put a tire like that under there - or you'll need to chop WAY back on the inner fender well in the rear.

POST UP MORE PICS!!!!

My vote is to go with more of a Rally car and less of a MadMax car.

But that's just me.

One of the Melee guys last year had a Renault or PeeeeUgote that they had done up in full rally regalia. Stickers, wire mesh on the headlights, driving lights, sump guard, bumper covers, etc...

He put it up for sale after the event and I belive he may have actually made a little bit of money on the deal.

Do whatever you want, then DRIVE IT!

This car is not ready to die yet, the drivetrain is excellent. I drove it home from belville tx (80 miles) and have driven it to work (24 miles each way) for 2 weeks. I've also driven it to College Station (110 miles) with no problems.

I'm going for MadMax in the correct form. My "MadMax Form" is function.

My ruff draft of ideas and concepts....

-Remove fuel tank (its a pos that will prob be riped open on a trail)

-Trunk mounted 6 gallon fuel cell

-repaired floors with full plating under them, I have a friend with ALOT of scrap stainless steel, which I want to use as armor plating for the driveshaft and floorboards

-Steel plating and skid plates front and rear 3/8'' thick

-roll cage, nothing fancy just a 6pt

-muffler threw the hood (if I leave stock exhaust it will be damaged most likely and I don't want open header, I've thought about it alot.... I want exhaust that will go straight up and not cause toxic fumes inside of the car.

-Offroad lights everywhere

-hooks welded to the front and rear bumpers

-gauges

-fiberglass racing seat (I got it for free)

-cut short throw shifter

-cut fenders for more suspension travel with bigger tires

I've decided changing the suspension geometry will be alot of work at this point and just stiffening it would help, planing on finding simular springs in the junkyard and spinning them together and tack welding them in place for double springs

-fully gutted interior

-possibly removal of the front bumper and remounting hooks/lights I will try it with them first, I rather have the bumpers to ram shit.

-roof rack

-14'' tractor all terrain tires

-battery kill mast switch

-extra wheels and tires

-mudflaps ofcorse

list to be added to, put your input in!

Thou shall use thy 2002!!!! This BMW was 2 days way from being towed away and crushed.

Now it lives once again as a Mad Max creation.

It competed against a 1988 Chevrolet Berretta, which it was victorious.

It made it down and up a 20 ft deep flood retainment pond 6 times, drove up a 2 ft high wall of dirt (i hit it doing 30+). And it suffered some damage at the end of the night when I went up a blind hill with a ditch on the other side. It damaged the left front bumper and headlight, knocked the belt off but was otherwise fair. Pulled it out and drove it back!

I had an AWSOME time! I wish I had the finish pics after the paintjob but this was during the painting phase.

the hood was reinstalled, webber filter installed. When the 02 got stuck due to my driver error driving into a blind ditch, we pulled it out using the tow hook...well it basicly riped half the trunk floor out LOL.

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

    The BMW 2002 Production Run

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
