For those of you with electric fans......

Does anybody have an electric fan mounted on the engine side of the radiator? My `76 has A/C that I'd like to keep, which means the condensor and such are blocking the way for a forward-mounted electric fan (a la Zenon Holtz and others).

If you have an electric fan on the engine side, what size and brand is it?

Most of the fans on the market will allow you to reverse the polarity and run either a puller or pusher setup. Just look on the box/details when you purchase.

As RIMSPOKE suggests check out your clearance between the h2o pump and the radiator.

If I were you I'd look to put a pusher fan on the condensor. Check your clearance between the kidneys and the condensor and look to install the BIGGEST pusher fan you can find. It'll push more air than an e20 sized fan and I'd bet (as long as you aren't racing) that you will be quite happy with the pusher on the condensor - it'll push through both the condensor and the radiator....

I'd think you'd need to go with two small fans-

or go to a 'thermo- siphon' like the Brits used to!

No, wait, that's a stupid idea...

Hey, why not rig your condenser fan to a t- stat, and use it for engine cooling?

It's almost big enough...

What I did was mount my electric fan way up in the nose, right behind the kidney grill, attaching a picture which hopefully shows this.  Just a generic/basic fan; think I got it from O'Riley parts.  Has nice recesses which can 'capture' bolt heads though, so I have one bolt in the top of the fan going up through the top of the noseclip, and then just some zipties holding the bottom corners I think to the stations for the side grills.  I think with the fan pointed a bit 'upward' the airflow isn't perfect, but seems to be working for me so far and some shrouding could always help this.  I just didn't like hanging the fan directly off of the radiator fins, as the mounting equipment that came with the fan was designed for.  Hope this helps!

hi carl,

Thanks - i actually have a similar set up already for my AC condensor.  But its just not enough for my car...

Hong Kong has cooled a bit and so I have a few months to sort this out, before the temperature rises again...

Thanks,

Emmet

pusher fans loose a lot of their effectiveness if they are not up against the radiator.  there is no problem hanging a fan off the radiator using those ziptie style thru fin mounts. have used that setup on several race cars.  that style mount gets the maximum airflow to the rad.  mounting the fan away from and not aimed at the rad is not recommended.

hi. thanks for the recommendation, the SPAL fan for 2002 looks great.  Were you able to install this fan between the rad and engine without modifying the position of the water pump?
