The common engine swaps are the 4 cyl s14 from the original (real) e30 M3 and the 6 cyl m20 from the euro only e21 323 and the e30 325.

Having said that, I'm sure somebody somewhere has done an m50 and I bet somebody here will chime in about it.

I need to hear your definition of "fit". Anything will "fit", but only a few things work, and even fewer work with a huge budget and perseverence.

My guess is that you mean "fit" as in somewhat easily with some readily available knowledge and parts. That answer would be no. The best alternative "fits" would be the S14 from the e30 M3 or M20 from many of the '80s BMWs including a few E21s, e30, e12, e28, etc.

I'm "fitting" an M54 block into my project track car. It'll hardly be an M54 when I'm done, but anyhow...I'm doing it very carefully and with an open mind and budget. I couldn't list or describe all the modifications that are being done to achieve this. Maybe when I'm finished in 3 years I'll write it all down. Email me if you have any specific questions I can help answer.
