tii fuel delivery checks

tii fuel delivery checks:

If you tii was running like a champ and then suddenly begins to run sluggish, surge, sputter or seems down on power, a possible culprit can be in the fuel delivery system.

1. Disconnect the battery and make sure you are working in a well ventilated area as you are working on the fuel system. Use caution as there will be some gas spillage in replacing the filter and/or cleaning screens. I prefer to work on a cold engine – do not work on the fuel system with a hot engine. I’ve whittled some dowels down so I can plug the fuel hose ends to help contain the amount of fuel spilled

2. Check the main fuel filter by the radiator support. Remove the filer and replace it if you can’t remember when you last changed it. In an emergency, tapping on the filter may help you get home or to a service location, however, there is risk that the junk causing the blockage will end up in you KF. Bad juju. Use only the tii specific filter (either Mann or Purolator) and do not use a cheap plastic/paper filter as the high pressure will destroy the paper element. Order 2 from your favorite vendor. Keep one in your car as part of your tool kit and replace annually.

3. Check in in-line filter for the KF. Follow the line from the filter to the KF. Loose the banjo bolt and clean the screen. Be aware the screen is NLA. Replace the crush washers.

4. Check the in-tank fuel screen for junk and while you’re at it, check the tank itself for sludge/crud or other accumulation after 30+ years. If there is any of above, carefully pump out or siphon the tank into an approved gasoline container and dispose of properly. Re-fill with fresh gas.

5. Check the in-line filter by the fuel pump under the rear axle. You will probably need to get the rear end elevated. Do not wear a favorite shirt but do wear gloves and eye protection and have a stopper ready as gas will come out of the line from the tank. If you jack up the car be sure to support the vehicle with jack stands at the appropriate points and block the front wheels. This screen is also NLA.

6. While you’re at it, order genuine BMW fuel hoses and replace them if you haven’t in a while. 2 meters should be enough to replace all the hoses. Do not buy cheap fuel hoses as the high pressure in the system will blow the hoses!! I use the rubber ones from BMW, some may opt to go the cloth wrapped hoses as they are period correct

If these checks don’t fix the problem, your fuel pump could be at fault.

Did you replace the o-ring below the suction plate after you pulled it from the tank? This part is tough to locate. Mine has a tear in it that provides a nice, nasty leak (headaches too). Heard from Bill Williams you must order this thru BMW dealership (no can do from Mobile Tradition).

I used a cheap ultrasonic jewelery cleaning tank to take off the gummy crud on all the strainers, along with the injectors. Excellent results.

O ring for sender is 16 11 1 744 369

Twist in gasket 16 12 1 105 332

Bolt in gasket 16 12 1 110 598

Any dealer, Blunt or seller of BMW parts can order this part. There is no real thing as ordering from "Mobile Traditions". Mobile Traditions does not sell parts. Mobile Traditions or now Mobil Classics Group is a group inside BMWAG that, for one thing, decides what parts BMWAG will make.

got it, just wanted to clarify that Mobile Traditions, now Mobile Classics, is a division of BMW AG not anyone selling Mobile Traditions parts. All dealers and resellers sell Mobile Traditions parts.

Should be a small cone-shaped filter on the inlet of the pump. Your original one may either be stuck in the pipe or was removed by a PO.

Whatever you do, don't poke a sharp instrument in the pipe - you may break the filter mesh.

Did you also check the one on the cold start valve?

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

    The BMW 2002 Production Run

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
