Need some rust help

that is just surface rust but it's at the stage where if left untreated will soon get all the way thru...sand it smooth or as smooth as possible then treat it with some brand of phosphoric acid...available at home depot, walmart, etc...name brands include rust no more, etc

spray it on, use a scuff pad to scrub it in....let it sit a few minutes, wash it off then prime the areas...the acid will turn in black or perhaps, dark green....that's normal

try a wire wheel to get the rust off if the sandpaper isnt cutting it, then do as esty said with the phosphoric acid. some of the acid metal treatments will actually replace the rust with zinc and it give it a whitish appearance. with or without zinc, they both work. top coat it quickly after treating it.

Ace hardware or probably home depot in the paint isle. Get the OSPHO , green liquid in a clearish plastic jug. Also get some heavy duty gloves and some good eye protection. It's the phosphoric acid that the others mentioned and works great. Goes on like water, work it in but read the directions also.
