73tii "Not For Sale"

Recommended Posts

Gentlemen:

I finally got it running, added a Curt Ingraham radiator (flawless), bought a 320is steering wheel (not on yet), tuned it up with the usual remove and replace stuff, added a battery, checked the electrical to my best ability, moved up to 15" wheels, and changed the front/rear pads/shoes. But after my brief test drive today...THERE IS SO MUCH MORE WORK TO DO...before it becomes a daily driver!

The car had been sitting for a long time...and as each day passes I start to notice more things needing attention. The car is slightly crooked with the right side higher than the left, probably the shocks. It runs fine but seem sluggish, probably the brakes (I didn't rebuild the calipers). When I did the conventional checks after changing the pads/shoes--OKAY. After the test drive I don't think the calipers are releasing, damn thing didn't roll downhill from a somewhat steep driveway in neutral, plus it pulls hard left when I jump on the brakes. The electric heater fan is making a weird noise, probably dragging against something and/or need lubrication etc. The clutch seems to still be engaged after releasing the pedal, probably me not ever driving one of these cars until today and not knowing when to optimally shift. Or it could be bad, slightly malfunctioning to the point of dragging before the RPMs increase (no problem shifting).

I could go on with little stuff here and there but I don't want to bore you guys anymore. I think I have a decent car worthy of the repairs which are forthcoming. For now, I DON'T HAVE ANY MORE MONEY! THANKS for all the help everyone and look for me asking all kinds of questions in the near future, some good and maybe some stupid.

The Road of Life Should Be Driven in a BMW2002!! Happy Trails!

Don't worry! Your not the only one with a 73tii that needs lots of love (and money). Your list of issues sounds very similar to mine. Every time I try to fix something I find out there are more problems.

But I'm not complaining... having something to fix keeps me sane.

Have Fun,

Casey

Sticky calipers:

remove pads on one side, and jam something between three of the four pistons to keep 'em from moving. Then have assistant slowly press brake pedal until the one free piston pokes way out of its bore (without escaping). Clean the boot, piston and surrounding area with brake cleaner, then carefully pry up the rubber boot. Inspect the piston; if rusty clean with emery cloth and then douse with brake cleaner again. Finally, use a little silicone grease on the piston and reinstall the boot. Repeat with the other three pistons, then do the other caliper. Not as good as rebuilt calipers, but MUCH cheaper.

Heater fan with funny noise:

if it's a dinging sound, it's the fan hitting the cold air mixer door at the bottom of the heater. Not a lot you can do about it without removing the heater, but with the door closed (heater on "hot" setting it shouldn't hit). It's usually intermittent anyway. If the fan is slow, you can easily reach the upper fan motor bushing, and with with a bright flashlight and a spray oil can with a long wand, you can kinda half ass lubricate the lower (fan end) bushing. Once lubricated, let the motor run for awhile to limber it up and distribute the lube. Then hit it again with the oil and you'll prolbably be good to go.

good luck
