starter problem

Hi I just got my hands on a 73 2002 and the starter needs to be replaced. the power cords, and ground in the front came off fine but one of the two screws, the one on the bottom, in the back that hold it on to the trans case wont come off. I dont know if there is anything left to try to get the screw out. I have tried PB blaster but its hard to lube in that weird position.

If you have any thoughts or suggestions please let me know, thanks for your time.

You know it should be a bolt with a nut on it? If you are trying to just turn the bolt head, that may be the problem. I use a long 17mm box wrench on the bolt and a curved box end 17mm wrench on the nut. I wedge the curved wrench under the starter and pull on the long wrench and I outsmart that bolt. Try it.

or on jack stands, a fair amount of rachet extensions and swivels can reach that nut. Have the trusty assistant hold the bolt and pull the trigger on your air tools or do what Dave (02fly) says.

Your signature "makes me thinks" you may have access to a lift and air tools.

Bonus answer: reinstall a starter from an E30 M3 and use a cap head bolt for the upper bolt. See other post about starters just recently, there are some pictures and discussion there too.
