Turn Signals

turn signal cancel tab, as Skip calls it, that is attached to the steering colum inside the steering wheel hub. If you remove your steering wheel you can see it.

The turn signal cancel tab has a circular device that goes around the top of the column and has another piece that extends towards the front of the car that is only about 25% of the circle. Really poor explanation, do not have a pic, sorry.

To better explain, the pin on the turn signal rides away from the turn signal cancel tab as the car goes straight. When you engage the signal, the pin presses against the turn signal cancel tab, as you turn the steering wheel, the pin goes in as the turn signal cancel tab rotates past it. As the wheel returns, the gadget hits the pin causing it to spring back to the neutral position.

That turn signal cancel tab needs to be centered in the middle of the pin from the turn signal (in the neutral postion) to get it to cancel properly.

Another problem is the pin can be adjusted too far away from the turn signal cancel tab. That pin can be adjusted by loosening the screw you see in there and prising the pin in towards the turn signal cancel tab.

I need to go take a picture today and post later. Need to wrap the presents and decorate the tree first.

peter,

i think this is the tab bill is referring to. in the past i've always just had to keep installing and adjusting the tab so that it eventually sits in the correct spot to cancel both left and right signals correctly. if you pay attention when you remove the wheel you can sometimes see where it is supposed to go...but it sounds like your beyond that step already. happens to the best of us. :)

sorry for the pic. didn't have any wheels disassembled in the dash at the moment to get a good in situ picture.

If I had Photoshop and if I could use it like the Brad, I would put arrows and fancy things on the photos. But since I don't and do not possess Brad's skills, plain photos will have to do.

Went out to the shed and pulled the steering wheel to get a shot of what you are looking to adjust. The pic above shows the cancelling tab on the steering column. Explanation of position is stated above.

This picture (above) shows the distance between the cancelling pin on the turn signal stalk and the cancelling tab. The shadow makes in a little difficult to disern. Also, when putting your steering column in, make sure it is centered in the shroud. If not the horn contact pin may shear off as it trys to rotate around the brass ring and get got in the shroud.

My little stick is pointing to the holes that allow adjustment of the distance of the pin to the cancelling tab. I discussed this above too
