Tii Starter removal what to look for??

It's really rather simple...only trouble you might have is removing one of the hard to reach bolts on the tranny to the block that holds the starter. Plus you need to be a slight "contortionist" to reach everything.

A tii should have the support bracket that the rear of the starter attaches to also.

You should consider going to the newer M3 starter for all of the usual reasons, stronger and lighter it is still a bosch etc.. I have not done the mod myself however I have heard nothing but good from those who have. It also eliminates the bracket that attaches to the block.

I hope you have small hands on top of excellent contortional skills, other than that all is pretty straight forward.

Good Luck

Typical tii parts removal. You can see the part, but you can't reach it...or...you can easily reach the part, you just can't see what you are doing.

If there is something in the way, just take the time to remove it. Playing contortionist is no fun. Remove the air cleaner. I'd also remove a couple of the air tube runners at the back just to get more access. Be sure to disconnect the battery FIRST. While you are in there, give all the fuel lines a check out, and also all the positives and grounds for the charging/starting system.

Is it an e30 m3 starter that guys are using??

Also, are there any mods that have to be done when using the m3 starter?? Or is other words, does the m3 starter bolt onto and plug into all the orginal connections??

Thanks again.

If you forum search "starter motor upgrade you will find the thread that lays out everything. Yes it is the e30 M3 and yes it bolts right up no hinky fabrication required.

I did it a year ago on my '72 tii, and I don't remember any particular problem. The E30 M3 starter (Bosch SR440X) seems to be fine. It's shorter than the stock starter (SR71X), so it's rear (toward the front of the car) doesn't reach the bracket between the block and the throtte body. I left the bracket in place, since I wasn't sure if it was designed to support the throttle body as well as the starter.

If your new starter has one more terminal than the cars has wires, leave terminal 15 unconnected.

Start by disconnecting the ground cable from the battery, then reconnect it last.

pull the motor -or drop the subframe ?

take care of the oil leaks at the same time.

Install a E30 S14 M3 starter motor in the place

of the original LUMP.

OAMs (Old Ass Men) not that Steve is one, realize patience and take your time, removing anything that is really in the way.

It pays off in the long run to get it right the first time and make it easy on yourself by removing the clutter.

Bonus answer: I use a cap headed bolt in place of the top hex head bolt. Put the washer and nut on the bellhousing side. Then, with an allen wrench, the bolt that is the most difficult to reach and hold, becomes quite easy to hold while you tighten everything up.
