Just wondering if there was any noticeable performance upgrade upon installation of an MSD on a stock 02 motor.

your stock setup is in good shape,

with new wires, good plugs, etc.

I did notice an improvement in idle

with a high- mileage oil burner.

But that would make sense, I guess...

I would have to say yes. Now, I have never had one on my o2, but I have put them on others and on my Volvo 145. In all cases they seem to start better, idle smoother, pull harder in upper rpm, and back in the day they helped pass emitions tests.

I think they work the best coupled with some sort of electronic ignition (Crane optical ect.) They do work with points if you have to. Don't forget to buy their blaster coil at the same time. short of going crank fired ignition I think this is a good hot setup.

To start off I want to state that I have not done this change to my 02. I am only writing the viewpoint I got from a friend who has done this conversion to his 2002tii. I was having trouble with the mechanical advance distributor in my 02 and from this started a conversation with my friend about the MSD he installed. I asked if he considered this modification worth doing and his response was he did not think the gain was worth the cost. I don't honestly know, but Harv states this makes starts better so I might still be willing to give it a try.

John,

I have a MSD 6AL that I bought off another member (in the recent past) that you can have for $100 if you are curious to give it a try.

Thanks for the offer but I'm going crank fired edis Ford ignition tied into a Megasquirt II this time around. I think the MSD 6AL works very well and can hide a multitude of tuning sins with a modifiied motor. It was night and day on my Volvo 145.

Simon,

Was that offer to me or another John on this thread?

I am new to the 02 thing but I like the interaction on this site and that is why I am making sure to qualify my responses with were I am getting my information. I am certain other members with first hand experience offer higher weighted info. So here is my addition. I spoke with a friend at last nights St. Louis BMW board meeting about this MSD question. Rick has been working on and for BMW since the 02 was new. His response is that the MSD is not needed for a stock setup. But that you will see performance advantages if the engine has other performance upgrades like cams...

John,

The offer is open to all.

I recently bought and installed a refurb vacuum advance dizzy in my stock 1974 '02. I have to say, my car has never run so smoothly. As a consequence, I'm not currently planning to add the MSD that I have had on hand for about 6 months.

Regards,

Simon

It looks like TobyB scooped me on the MSD you have but let me know if something happens and I will but it.

Toby,

I'm feeling generous, I'll throw in the tach adapter. Email sent.
