Talked w/ '76 original owner @ 7th & Lincoln tonight

I was in the Shell station @ 7th and Lincoln topping off (so the horrible gas smell in the touring would continue? No, so I would not run out of gas again) when in drove this guy in a granatrot 1976. He says "awesome car" to which I say "your is pretty nice, too." He says "Thanks I'm the original owner." We talked a tad more and off I went, with a full tank of gas and a smelly interior.

He looked to be 20 or 25 when he bought it 30 years ago.

God, I wish I was the original owner of my little box.

is that owning a 2002 is like the fountain of youth, it keeps me thinking that I am still young, (some people may call it being caught in a time warp). Maybe that's the reason why there are quite a few original owners out there, and also quite a few others that lament selling theirs - and those guys are really getting old!

It is a great excuse to do really inmature things!

One of our cars has been in the family since my father's cousin brought it here in 1977. he bought it new off the lot in Germany and brought it in on an Air Force plane. It gives me goose bumps just to look at the car. I refuse to drive it untill I'm living in a place where it can stay in a garage at my house, I can maintain it and I can only drive it on the best of days. Untill then it sits resting in a storage unit....

You're right about the fountain of youth idea. I feel like I am a 17 year old driving my dad's Golf roundie again each time I head out in mine. I think that is a powerful thing. It puts you in a zone, kind of like the Harley guy who finds it hard to explain to an outsider why he loves riding his Harley so much.

I love the pic, Dubois! As with some who have mentioned they too would like to be the original owner of their 02er, I have to chip in and say the same. Karl is only 10 years older than me, I was born too late! But I can't help to think that if I owned one of these cars that was purchased brand new off the lot, what kind would I get? What color, auto or stick, carby or EFI?

The thing I know for damn sure is that if I had bought one of these brand new, it would not get to the shape that Karl is in now!

"My dad was right, it was cheaper just to buy a new car."
