Problem with my L light

Here's the history

My 1973 Tii battery (which is fairly new) was not charging

My problem was the voltage regulator

Put in a new VR and would occasionally see my L light flicker on and then go off (as I'm sure many of us see a faint or flickering L light)

Today (a few weeks after replacing the VR and having no problem) ) I was driving home and noticed the typical signs of discharging (signals barely work-wiper barely moving)

Got home and battery is DEAD

Now I'm thinking I NEVER SAW THE L LIGHT coming on.

I have read that system can't charge w/o L light so I pulled the cluster WITH HIGH HOPES that my L light is burned out

NO SUCH LUCK

I'm still hopeful that it's the L light and not the alternator . My concern is WHY WONT MY L LIGHT EVEN COME ON AT THIS POINT?? Can I check anything else with the cluster out?

Thanks

Put your battery on a charger, once full, start her up and check your voltages with a DMM (digital multimeter - a cheapo one is like $15-20). you should have 14V at the battery. If not check the back of the Alt (bypassing the VR). Is the thick brown wire connected from the block to the Alt? if broken or missing you will get no charge. Just some more things to check. Just went through this with my 74tii, posted results down the board, but what I found was a broken field wire (black one), going into the alternator inside the plug. I had to cut the plug apart and seperate the leads to repair. The tail of the plug in my case is levered away from the alternator by the radio resister mounted on the alternator. I beleave the years finally did the trick.

Odd thing was continuity through the wire checked fine.

HTH.....
