bmw2002faq,

i have noticed that most guys use fender flairs to accommodate wider tires on a 2002. do any of you know of anyone who has tubbed their 2002 so the tires can fit under the car? i am interested in sleepers and the flairs are an easy give-away.

Problem is shocks and suspension not body. It would take some MAJOR work to re-engineer the complete suspension so you could run fatter tires to the inside. Up front it's going to be impossible unless you run 30 degrees of camber (not a smart thing to do) or make custom strut housings, in the rear anything is possible.

Why not just use an appropriate tire width and put an appropriate motor in? You don't need a 12" tire to GO FAST.... What motor are you running that you have so much power you have problems getting it to the pavement?

I'm with Winston on this one-

stick your head under the car for a minute and

you'll see why it's a huge project.

Yes, you could do it,

but how life is short and welding

properly takes time....

and welding CV shafts takes skill!

Here's a followup to your initial post because I felt bad just saying no and questioning your build. Why not try doing things to lighten and balance the car? Do things like look for composite hood, trunk, doors, etc. light wheels, take out weight where you can so your power to weight ratio is up there as good as it gets. Shop around a little - you want a sleeper? Take a Butt-stang 5.0L divide HP by weight and get a nubmer, porsche, Ferrari, etc. Keep going till you get some numbers and you start getting farmilliar with how many HP per pound you need to really fly. Next focus your energy on a good solid 2002 motor, suspension, drivetrain and BRAKES build. Shave off weight so you start to rival modern car's power-to-weight ratio. Even with a 180hp motor if you lighten things up enough, properly, and add support and stiffen in the right areas, you can have a sleeper that can CRUSH - just don't waste your time and money shoving things inward as you're only going to run into headache. put tiny little flares like DapBMW's Alpina flares sold on the FAQ store and you'll be quite happy.
