Pitted glass will make the lights look cloudy and diminish output.

You can get some glass polishing stuff from eastwood or griots. Polishing will help a bit, but you will need to weigh your time and effort against the cost of new lamps.

I need to do the same to see if I can save a set of lights on my M3. Two are cracked and need to be replaced, but the others...

I had that problem with mine, but it turns out the fogginess was actually on the inside of the glass. You can take out the lenses and try touching the inside of the glass somehow, and it may rub right off. Just swirling water around inside isn't enough to clean it, but you can try throwing in some kind of cleaning pad to actually contact the glass, and swirl it around. Just be careful not to rub off the silver on the reflector.

I didn't ever get around to finishing that job on my car, but it should work. I was lazy and swapped in the new lenses from my other car, which is in storage.

Old bicycle water bottle trick.

Hot water and a small handfull of rice.

As you swirl it around, the rice acts as an abrasive to remove the gunk.

Rinse well, many times.
