boxed trailing arms

At this point that is a secret that I will never reveal. As you can imagine, a large pile of clams. I have kept it low key among people I know because when you look at the pictures you can see that I am completely fucking insane. Having said that, the car was my Dad's and has a lot of sentimental value. I have looked at a lot of cool cars over the years, but I just can't see driving some high profile bad ass car and I always come back to the 2002. Way back in the day I saw an article on Cooper's car and thought that guy is crazy, but I can't think of a car I would rather have. Anyway, now I guess I am committed, powering on through, and as insane as he is. I can tell you that the price of the bodywork has exceeded my salary for the year. Wait till that she gets up to Kermit Upton for the 2.5 Liter M3 drivetrain. Hopefully, I will be driving that car until I die (at least a few weeks after completion).

In the spirit of full disclosure, the bodywork is approaching my yearly salary. Having said that I think the McGinns have been pretty fair about everything so far. They seem to do high quality work and anyone who is trying to get from picture 1 to the final product in a project like this has got to be ready for a lot of time and/or money. Obviously, the car is not finished but for what they have done I think things have probably cost what they would from anyone who is capable of doing the type of metal restoration they have done. If you look at some of the firewall repairs, rocker panels, etc this becomes more frightening.

McGinn bros - how did you keep the control arms from twisting or warping during welding? I used some pipe, thread all, and washers between the arms on my trailing arms but not sure what should be done on the control arms. (photos looked to have before and after photos of the trailing arms and control arms) Anybody else have any suggestions - chime in.

Thanks

Pete

Here is a link to pictures of some boxed trailing arms that the McGinn Brothers at SCR made for me.

Amazing work on that shell - the money will pale into insignificance once you've got a few hard driven s14 kilometres under your belt. Like you say, a car for life. Can't wait to see the finished article.

Those guys are good experienced welders so for starters they really know what they are doing. I'd imagine you could fit the arm in a press (or a GIANT vise) and clamp down. That would stop twisting. It's either that or slow careful welding. Ask yourself though - is it really needed? Unless you can do that yourself and you're really going to push your car that hard why not just buy a brand new set for $100/side?

bmw thought it was necessary for going from 100 to 130bhp, so I'd say yes. $100 a side? Realoem lists over 500 and I didn't even think they were available.

I did my fronts and just did an inch at a time at different corners. Kinda like the torque sequence on the head bolts till I was done. They didn't warp at all.

All of the work looks immaculate from my perspective, I was never really expecting a number but it sure looks like it is in the '07 carrera S4 neighborhood. Maybe after you drive it for a while you can sell it back to the factory for their museum, actually I am willing to bet that most of us Sado-masochists out here would sell family and non-essential body parts to have it. All the best on your quest.

Just a guess - I used to help appraise boat restorations. Twice the retail selling value. $20K car = $40K resto approx...
