I had that problem when I was putting the dust shields on my stub axles. I had to make a tool to help in the press. I think that's what your going to have to do.

Can you put the bolts in with nuts? The washer type things might help squeez them on the cv joint.

Not much help tonight.

The bolt and nut thing might work if you can get you hands on a set of VW CV joint washers, they come 3 to an axel ( 6 bolts hold em on just like ours ) and have a web between each two holes. Early rabbit was 80mm axels and anything from 90 on to about 98 was 100mm ( outside diameter measurement)

Junkyard part on every watercooled VW made.

1/2" all thread thru center with large wood blocks on either side. get smaller studs thru the wood on the outside or thru the threaded holes in the CV. As you compress it and it starts to tip, you bring it back in to concentric with the outer studs. Slow and steady wins the race on this one. Good luck!

Well when I redid mine there was a recesed ridge just inside of the lip of the cap, I had a piece of pipe (CV) that fit the diameter and the width of the gap. I just fit it in that recessed gap and tapped it around with a hammer.

No problems since.
