That thing is just plain awesome... (I posted this link a few weeks back ;-)) I fear the thought of it's price though.

modern '02 to carry the torch forward - a small, bare bones, manual everything, a/c optional rocket sure sounds like the spiritual successor to the '02, regardless of what it might look like....

agreed, i just am not a fan of the retro look.ie hhr,pt cruiser,mustang GT etc etc.

I agree there too... there is a real trend amongst Euro manufacturers with retro cars - they are just picking up on after the yanks have been doing it for years.

I couldn't imagine a modern-retro version of the 2002.

Saw quite a few 1-Series cars when in Europe this summer, especially in London. I really liked them. Exterior and interior are very nice. Maybe that's why we saw so many.

I bet you they are making a little more than 306hp too. At least the E92s that have been dyno'd show a little more at the flywheel. NICE.

One tuner on bimmerforums started out at 275whp and is now over 330whp and they still are not done yet.

Damn impressive.

BMW's success with the Mini shows how a "retro" looking car with great driving characteristics can be a financial winner. BMW can't seem to make enough Mini's!

Having said that, its not critical for me to see BMW offer a retro-looking 2002 - I'd rather see BMW offer a car in the $25-35k range which continues the '02 virtues of being a quick and great handling car which could be "tuned" for more performance.
