The shortie center console is different than the stock one.... (NO! Really??)

Seriously it's shaped differently not just stock console but shorter. Should I just chop the one I got or should I try and cut a new one?

Oh it's gonna work... just wondered if you knew/had any words of wisdom before I tried to cut twice and measure.... errrr well didn't really measure!

Coping saw is in hand... Megan has no idea that the kitchen sink is about to become my woodshop. Will post pics shortly of before & after as well as the viynl, etc. That stuff was cheap! 2-yards for $11! Two yards by 56" is enough to cover about 5 consoles!

I just measured the length and I'm cutting as I think it should be... when this thing is done it'll be one of the nicest things in my car so I'm not worried. Thanks!

i thought you seriously had a problem....cutting by hand, are you...that's real old world craftsmanship....bet it'll be a beaut

when you trace the vinyl...be sure you allow a lot of extra to streatch around the edges...after you get it glued and stapled, you can always trim off any excess you don't like being there with a razor knife

i still have some maroon dye, like i did my console in....if you're interested in really snazzing things up....what was it a dude said to me a few nights ago about my red seats...you can "guild the lily"

Here are the two patterns. Not sure if the highlighter will show up but the dotted/yellow tracing is the outline of the console Jack gave me. It was a long (standard) console from an unknown vehicle. The dark solid pattern is what esty sent me from a '69 shortie console.

I ended up with something inbetween the two.

Zip tied the two sections together so they would be cut the same. Almost had to eye-ball it and just go with it... I will be doing a little shaping and rounding with files, sandpaper and filling with good old JB Weld.

Final one - like you guys really want to see a sharpie line and part of a coping saw...

Question: What's the best type of staple to really grab into particle board like this? Was thinking about getting the 1/4" and going easy with the staple gun. Is there a better tool? Haven't bought the staple gun yet. Something upholstry or fabric related... would that be better?

i'd never use use particle board....it will crumble and fall apart and staples won't work

go to home depot or a construction site and beg a scrap of 5/8 or 3/4 " plywood or buy a small piece...if all elese fails, i'll send you a pair of good blanks for you to cover

Was worried about that. The 30+ year old particle board is pretty fragile but I live in an apartment - that coping saw and a cordless drill are the only tools I'm allowed to have in the house! Megan would kill me if I tried to use a jigsaw or something inside - and between the dust and the noise it would be a disaster! Also I'd have to use a router and round the edges.... i'll have to make due with the particle board for now and either just glue the crap out of it or use threaded fasteners to keep things together.

I'm half tempted to use fiberglass and balsa core - but then again I'd think that would be a no-go in the house also :-(

I need a house!
