How to remove crank pulley and bolt

Specifically,

you can usually run an 8mm bolt through the flywheel so that it hits the block. Alternately, a 6mm can be sacrificed...

then you need a 30mm socket and a healthy breaker bar- that nut can be pretty tight.

The cast pullies do often need a puller- the stamped ones haven't, in my experience.

once the bolt is off as explaned above use 2 flat head screw drivers (preferably pry bar type) and walk it back and forth. it take about a min but its the only way I have found to keep from braking the pully.

You can order a cheap VW flywheel lock tool - it looks like the letter "C" and is held to the block via a common 8mm bolt. Each end of the C shape engages a tooth in the flywheel - that way you're spreading out the load and not using a screwdriver / prybar on one tooth only. BMW has one, too - and it's about $6 (mine's at the shop) but I don't know the tool number off hand.

one good tool: impact gun. Re-torque by HAND with torque wrench though!

It's EASY to chip or damage the cast iron pulley when pulling it off - don't PRY on it - use gently evenly spaced puller arms if it doesn't come off by hand. cast iron is far more brittle than it looks!

HTH!
