Relay for foglamps question

Recommended Posts

Researched the relay and lighting messages in this site but didn't see any advice for this relay. This relay used to run my foglamps, but I disconnected it a while ago. I'd like to wire back up my fog lamps but have lost my wiring notes. The connectors are labeled 1, 2, 3, and 4 and located as in the photo. Can anybody provide a wiring diagram?

Yikes.

I haven't seen that relay before.

The terminals are usually labeled as 85, 86, 87, 30/15.

From my write up:

On the standard relay there are four connections. “85”, “86”, “87”, “30”.

The control wire from the fog light switch “S” connects to “86” on the relay.

The opposite side “85” connects to ground.

Connection “30” will be the supply +12v. This wire should be of proper size and fused. Usually connected to the bolt on the + battery terminal. In the Haynes manual and on my car, there is a connector into the white wires for the headlights. I would not use this as a power source for fog lights as this wire is only live with the high beams on.

Connection “87” supplies power to the fog lights themselves. The fog light bodies are usually grounded to the car body completing the circuit.

If you are insistant about using this relay, I would get a 9volt battery, a test light and some clip leads. pretty easy to figure out, just use low power and quick connections to test.

No, I'm not at all insistent in using it. Is the wiring for your relay for a factory relay? Got a part number? For a 74, does it fit in that rack above the battery? Thanks!

As far as I know, the rack above the battery holds the relay connectors. All of the relays that plug in there are all 4 or 5 standard pin relays. The only difference between the two is that the 5 pin has two output terminals as opposed to one.

If your relays are newer, they may already have a bosch part number on them. Most of the newer relays also have the schematic on the top or side so you can figure out which pins go to what.

If you have the bosch part number, you can go to any import car parts place (or Monument) to get a relay.

if you are going to buy a new relay, get one with two 87 terminals - one for each lamp. it will make wiring a bit easier. for fog lamps you could tap into the circuit for either you low beams or city lights (if yoiu have them) I've just bought bosch relays for a headlamp upgrade, part # is 0332019150 and it is rated at 30 amps.

Hope this will help.

It's for a Touring tii, but I assume the wiring is the same for the saloon.

Items 72, 73, 74, 77 & 81 are for fog lights (fr & rear).

Item 5 (lower LH corner) is also noted as a terminal for fog lamp relay, but the wiring by-passes this!!??
