new 02 owner + question

Bought my first 02 about 6 month ago. 1970 roundie, White, 5 speed trans. I always thought the 02 was a cool little car when i saw one but never realized how awesome they are and fun to drive (more than my Cooper S)

Anyway, i've seen some people replace the hose from the oil breather to carb with filter. What is the benefit and where can i get one?

Thanks for any advice/help

The filter can clog, building pressure in the crancase. Also, oil vapor still gets all ove the underhood area. Messy.

It's best to vent the cam cover to the air cleaner, or a catch can.

the benefit...it'll keep your carb clean of all that oil and sludge blown into it from the head...the down is, those small filters, available at almost any corner autoparts store will not stop the blow inside the engine compartment...you'll soon have oil all over your engine...autozone sells them...inn red, blue, green and silver

I haven't had an opportunity to try this myself, but it seems to me that the optimal solution would be to route the vent tube to some sort of catch can first, then vent the catch can either back into the air cleaner housing, or perhaps use one of those small vent filters at that point.

as for your question... getting a hose to the carb... there should be a hose nipple coming off the head or valve cover (can't remember which... sorry the car isn't here right now) that your current breather filter is attached to. I see you have a cool looking redline aircleaner... I'm not familar with that one, but on my chrome weber aircleaner, made for a K&N filter, there is a hole in the bottom and a nylon 90 degree fitting... one end screws on to the base of the aircleaner... the other end is a hose nipple. connect a hose between the two. I have a pretty large diameter (1/2"??) heater hose... because it can get clogged up especially if you live in cold climes.

Pierce manifold should have this setup... but that redline looks cool, I'm sure you could modify it to work.

Do it... I'm all for recirculating the nasties.

hope that helps

This is one of Karl's M3 "miscellaneous" parts. The oil thing on the right. The corrigated black plastic hose has since been replaced by a rubber one, but it's still the same set up.

Is there an inlet on the Weber that's not connected at all? Up-top pointing towards the fuel pump?

Then, the connections at the fuel pump look very different from anything I've seen.

Any more pics?

I love the setup that pedro has but was wondering....if not a dedicated racer could you just run the hose from the stock outlet to a catch with the breather? This would give you the oil catch and not fill your carb with sludge. Seems feasible and easier than the modification to the cover. Just not sure if you have to have hte baffles in the modified cover. chris

Well if you are talking to me, yes, I do have two more pics. And no, the inlet is not hooked up. There wasn't a reason to.

Your fuel pump initially looked like it had a 3rd connection off of it's top. But now I see that it's just got the regular in and out.

But your carb looks like it has 3 fuel inlets. You have one hooked up, one plugged with a hose and bolt and one just open. Does the open one also go into the bowl? If so, you should probably plug it so that you don't have spillage. Do you ever get strong fuel smells under the hood?
