tightening your TINY NUTs

...your tiny rocker arm - valve adjusting nuts that is.

pictured lower left here is the special low torque wrench handle (00.2.050)

that is used with a box end wrench (11.1.150) to gain tight access to the rocker arm ecentric nuts. Tightening torque is 9 Nm (newton meter)

I'll let you convert that to in. or ft. lbs. Forget 'proper torque' if during the prior 30+ years of over tightening, striping, molesting these nuts and threads are toast now. NEW parts are needed.

...and how many of you replace the 'special' compression sealing washer under the oil delivery tube banjo bolt every time the cam cover is off? The washer does compress and the banjo bolt loosens during 15,000 +/- miles - causing poor oil delivery to the cam.

see photo number 32 11 140 below

....and how about that 'odd ball' single "Self-Sealing" washer

at bolt #2 in photo 32 11 142 below - it seals the bolt at the rear distributor housing - don't just put anyoldwasher in there !

CD... Not that you are the dealer - but almost as good at times... Might you know about how much one of those buggers will run me? I've just ordered brand-spanking new nuts, bolts & eccentrics for my valves. I'd like to use that torque wrench to replace them. Should I just call up the dealer?

Thanks for posting that photo and the part numbers. I really appreciate it!

Your best bet would be to search any of the specialty or automotive tool suppliers. You know the size (10mm) and the torque (9nm) so it should be easy to match.

I guess it is like flare nut wrenches. You never feel a need to own them until you bugger up one of the nuts. Then the cost of the special tool is justified.

Let us know what you find in your search. I am a tool-aholic.

WHOA!!! Dealer refuses to sell "OTC" (Over the Counter). It's a BMW specific tool and not available to the little people I guess. When I asked what I was supposed to do to adjust my valves they said: "Isn't your car under warranty?" "You shouldn't be touching your engine outside a dealership anyway."

WONDERFUL!! Any other thoughts? CD wanna buy a few & sell them to us? Dealer says NLA on the torque wrench handle (00.2.050) but it is listed as $286 plus tax. The box end wrench (11.1.150) is also NLA but lists as $33.12 plus tax.

I'm going to look at MAC or Snap-ON to see if they have tiny torque wrenches, or something that will measure in that range. I know McMaster Carr sells small torque wrenches however they are all 1/4" drive and you can't fit the ratchet in there.... Stumped....

Searching also...

Have you checked Baum Tool or SIR Tool ?

They have lots of specialty tools for BMW/Mercs.

I'll look. McMaster Carr has small torque wrenches. errr... scratch that they have just about everything torque related under the sun. You can buy something that would probably work but it's going to run you upwards of $300-$500

Baum Tools/Stahlwille = ST730/2 - 4-20Nm torque "handle" wrench $314.82 (box end inserts sold seperately)

Pricey!!! But maybe worth it. I think I'm gonna pass for now but look into it at a later date. For $100 I'd do it on the spot but by the time you buy the inserts too you're up over $400 - too rich for my blood at the moment.

Also try stahlwille's website as Baum's is down.
