life (so far) with the touring

The touring has been tuned in and is now serving as a semi-daily driver. Since the motor has about 100 miles on it so far, I don't take it above 5000 rpm, so I cannot tell what it is going to be like "in the pipe." But from idle (~1250rpm) to 5k is great. Even with the 304 cam, it is smooth and strong in pretty much the whole range, with building power and excitement as the revs increase. It's a blast to drive and all the thanks go my mechanic Sherman who roughed it in for now (he'll fine tune it after the motor is ready to go to the red line)!

The only real downside is that gas smell that was there before is still there, even though I routed all fuel outside the passenger compartment (with stainless steel hoses), renewed the gaskets at the tank, and had the tank boiled and cleaned. The only thing I can figure is the rubber boot at the inlet.....

I had the same problem - did what you have and then decided it must be the rubber boot. It looked a little tired but not obviously the problem. Not only replaced it but also added a a small extension collar as when installed normally it was a real stretch - perhaps I didn't have a proper Touring rubber and the saloons were shorter? Either way, it solved the issue.
