At what power do the stock 4 spds break?

how much north of 200 ft/lbs can you go? and what about the rest of the stock drivetrain?

Thanks

Many have gone down this road and asked this question - myself included. What are your plans? If you have north of 200ft/lbs you're talking some serious HP... why ever keep the stock 4-gear and not at least upgrade to a 5-speed? I've asked over and over and unless you have some serious money to burn don't worry about it. There are plenty of guys running 5-spd OD and CR gearboxes in their 200+hp race cars with little problems. If you really need to go wild bring your wallet full with about $5,000 and get yourself a custom gearbox/bellhousing combo from VAC Motorsports. Other than that you're out of options for the M10.

The cheapest way would be to just drive it till the tranny brakes then replace it with another 4 speed. The 4 speed is everywhere, relatively cheap, and takes about 4 hours to remove and reinstall. If you brake one just replace it and drive on. Unless you want to spend lots of money then get the 5 speed conversion or have one made like the others have suggested.

is there anyway to buy their components and rebuild it yourself?

it sounds like id only need their bearings for power reliability, syncros arent relevant to power, but how hard you drive and shift right? are the gears themselves up to it? im thinking of a turbo rat rod, making most of it myself and using used parts, most of them from my boss(i strip old bmws and vws that are being parted out) how hard is it get a getrag 265 to fit in the tranny tunnel?

Thanks
