another tii clock repaired! source for light bulb found

I just followed Karl's instructions and used a 12W solder pen...it was easy except taking the clock out and bezel off...once the dash was apart i was able to clean it all out.

If anyone's interested...the light bulb for the clock was available at north hollywood speedometer...they do the quartz conversion.. i wanted to keep the mechanical.

The original electro-mechanical tii clock is the "only" way to go! Good choice. There's nothing like hearing that "clunk" when the mechanism resets and "keeps on ticking".....sweet sound!!!! Vintage Sweet! You all can have your quartz stuff! :-)

the light is part of the wiring harness/power/ground that plugs into the back of the clock housing. once the clock is out of the dash you'll see the bulb coming off one of the three attachments. you just pull out the bulb and put in a new one...of course that's where i was stumped. NHspeedo fortunately had a couple...i hope it arrives soon. even the person i spoke to didn't know a part number or where to order it.

as for the clock repair..Karl's instructions on the links page was perfect.

It's supposed to clunk...or are you just being sarcastic in your quote above? I always thought mine was broken because of that clunk. The clock in my '73 Tii ticks and clunks on a pretty consistant rhythm, though it looses time....about ten minutes a week...what's the fix for that? My other two tiis, the clocks don't work at all....the '72's will come to life for a bit after a track day...must be all the G's on it going around the track...but then goes silent again within a day....That one also clunks when it's alive.

sound the solenoid makes as it winds the clockspring every five minutes or so. The clock itself is mechanical (just like an old Big Ben alarm clock) but instead of winding it with a key every week or so (which would require a large mainspring), there's a very small mainspring in the car clock that's wound by a solenoid every few minutes. As the spring winds down, it closes a set of points that energizes the solenoid.

If your clock isn't keeping good time, there's a fast-slow adjustment on the back (or inside the case) usually marked +....-. If the clock isn't working at all, it's probably due to dirty points preventing the solenoid from getting power when they close. Clean the points and I'll bet the clock will work again.

Later tii's use a quartz clock that's completely different inside. They don't clunk.

cheers

Mike said it better than I could.....thanks Mike! I wasn't being sarcastic about the "clunk" sound...I love that sound!!!...means the clock is still working! :-)

Something about old Kienzle clocks....and who cares if they don't keep perfect time? That's one of the things so vintage about them.

I found the right clock for my 73. Do I simply solder a link between those two round tabs? Does it have to be center to center? Thanks. Oh yeah, Can you tell me the markings on the base of the bulb? I'm sure I can get it form my supliers. Thanks

The clock in your old tii is still working fine. I do have to re-set the time after being disconnected from the battery (for the Battery Tender).
