shimmy in steering wheel

The car has a rebuilt front end. All new stuff. Bran new today 185/60/13 tires.

I am having a hard time figuring out the shimmy. the driveshaft has been cut. Could it being out of balance possibly cause the shimmy? The car was aligned when the front end was rebuilt about 6 weeks ago.

U gotta check all your standard stuff...

was your driveshaft balanced when it was cut? did you pay for balancing when you got it chopped?

Check tie rods, ball joints, bushings, bearings, wheel balance weights.....

If you just did all these things chances are someone did something a little off...

in or out? does it change with speed? Does braking effect it? can you feel it in the brakes? Does steering one way or the other change it? right or left? Turn off the engine and coast down the road with your head out the window- can you hear anything?

Retorque Everything. Check the various steering connections including the flex disc thingy. Could be one bad tire/wheel (switch them around).

Like Ray and Mike say, if you feel it in your hands, front end concerns.

If you feel it in your butt, driveline woes.

IF you feel it in your hands, check your wheel bearings and tighten one more cotter pin hole.

...in diagnosing any 'new' ailment - retrace any changes just before

the ailment began.

Did this occure JUST after the tires were replaced?

JUST after the driveshaft work?

OTHER repair -

try rotating the 4 wheels and feel if the vibration has moved to

seat?, steering wheel?, floor?

is it at a specific rpm?, mph? gear? on gas load? off gas coasting ?????

I had a similar problem recently. If you feel it in your hands and can accelerate out of it, then it's more likely balancing than front end problems.

And if you have had it in and out of the tire place for balancing and still have problems, I have to ask if you bought cheap tires from somewhere like Big O Tires? There is another problem that will happen with cheap tires other than a half assed balancing job. Cheap tires are often "out of round", meaning that the manufacturing process sucks and tires come out somewhat oval giving you the same effects of a bad balancing job. Apparently this was a big problem with older manufacturing processes, hence problems with cheap tire made in Indonesia or wherever using thirty year old equipment. Never skimp on the tires.
