A Simple Hello

I am new to the forums but not new to 2002s. I have a ITB racecar that is turned drift car. I have been competing in the car at east coast events and doing quite well despite the 120hp. My competition has nearly 350hp so its tough. I am either going to turbo charge the M10 or squeeze in a M50. Im the meantime for the next event in VIR, I am doing some sidedrafts and a crazy snappy clutch that I am having custom made at a local clutch manufacture.

Anyway, I love the project posts.

I am in need of the carbs as well as information on the M50 swap.

Yeesh! Good luck with the M50. I'm going to attempt an M42 transplant with my boyfriend one day soon. You'll have to do some pictures for us when you get the chance!

I would like a set of 40 dcoes, or even 45s. I just need more power for the next event. If I go turbo, I will convert to fuel injection first. So, if you have a complete fuel injection setup that would work, I could use it also. I know what to do, Im just out of time for the next event. If I can get something to get me thru the next events, I can take more time in the winter.

The 2002 kicks butt drifting, the vids you see are done in 3rd gear and clutch kicking the crap outta it to keep it sliding. the car gets alot of attention in the media and magazines, its great. In a sea of 240SXs, a 2002 stand out.....especially when you beat 400hp cars with a 120hp car.

I think I heard "Old school BMW" about 15 times in those two videos, I could imagine that would go down very well amongst the crowd :-)

I cant help you with the carbs, but it might be worth posting a thread in the Gerneral Discussion area to request the carbs. A turbo EFI set up should work well. Have a look on General Discussion for a thread started by "Turbo" he has a nice manifold set up for an M10 and make close to 400hp! That might be an option!

Do you have any pictures of the car up close?

Cheers,

Todd

Looks like you may need a closer ratio steering box. On some of those corners it looks like you're steering a little too late because you're having to spin the steering wheel around too many times.

The steering could be a bit tighter, but the biggest issue is power. I have to unwind the drift slowly so that I can accelerate to the next turn. I had to do a mild drift in the first turn to make it through the course. Unfortunatly, I only linked the entire course 2 times out of 20, and those were not captured on film. My 3rd qualifing run was my best.

That course was the fastest "constant speed" course Ive done. I have done a top of 3rd gear entry with a slide down to 2nd gear (decreasing radius), but this track was a 3rd gear the whole time. It was very difficult to slide, I was at 11/10ths the whole time. One mistake and it propagated throughout the run (vid 0014). The high power guys can mess up and make up for it in the middle of the run.

Got to say though, its nice in the 2002. Coincidentally, I have a 350hp Nissan I built 4 years ago, but I choose to drive the 2002. I grew up with these cars, cant get em outta my system.

Damn! It sits nice and low! What is your suspension set up like?

The car was a SCCA Clubracing car for many years. It has ground control coilovers with Bilstien shocks and struts. The front bils are out of a 300z made to fit (upper shperical bearing), 500lb springs front, 400lb rear(?) cant remember. I believe the swapbars are metric mechanic and the engine is 40 over balance blue-print. 32/36 carb and currently has a mild cam. 13x6 wheels on brand new 195/60-13 front and 185/60-13 rear sumitomo HTR 200's.

Its crazy fun. Im an ex road racer, drifting is so much fun.

Why the M50 and not an M20? Also you can build a 200hp M10 motor if you want for probably cheaper than the M20 project will cost you. You can also run an E30 318i fuel injection setup - go to www dot zeebuck dot com and check out zennon's site. That's a really cheap way to get EFI in your car and then you can easily upgrade to turbo later The M20/50 motors are a lot of work but will also pay off because of the torque. Best of luck! Post some pics of your engine and car's setup!!!

As for the DCOE's you can call pierce Manifolds (New) or try the for sale section for used.

Well, I just got a call back from a guy with a wrecked 1993 325i manual transmission, it was hit in the passenger side door and I am buying it. It will give me everything I need to do the M50 swap. Replacement motors have been priced around 1k, so if I blow it up, its not a wallet killer (like the S14). I have seen one guy swap it, but he didnt finish cause a tree smashed the car. He bolted the entire E36 subframe into the 2002. I dont think I will do it that way, because I think making motor mount brackets will be easier and cleaner when Im finished.

dont get me wrong, I love turbo cars, I made a turbo kit for my nissan and I love it (320 rwhp), but WOW the sound of a screaming NA straight 6 would also be awesome. I had a choice, and the option that came through first was the M50. After the last drift event of the year, Iwill break it down and get going. I am planning to document this swap, because it seems that there arnt many people that have done it. We will see.

DO IT!!!

I mean you can certanly get it done that way. The M50 is 24V right? You can get all the power you want out of those motors because there are stroker kits that will get you up to over 3.0L. If you tear down your car the easiest thing to do will be to hold the two subframes up next to each other and compare. Possibly cut the uprights that hold the motor mounts off of the E36 subframe and weld those to the 2002? It wouuld be clean and you'd get to use all the E36 (your 325i wrecked car is an E36) motor mounts etc. You will need to also modify the 2002 subframe on the bottom cross member to make room for the oil pan, etc. PLEASE DOCUMENT so we can all see your progress!!! The torque of the M50 will be much better than the M10/S14 and the M20 guys can help you out with the spring rates, etc. The other thing will be your tranny tunnel and the firewall. If you're gonna do all that work move the motor back a few inches and just chop the trans shift platform. It'll give you better balance overall in the car and more room up front so you don't have to hack up the nose to fit the radiator. When you need things like driveshaft shortening, spring rates, suspension setup, etc. we're all here!

Best,

TJW
