Headlight buckets

Are the right and left buckets the same? Somehow I think I have two of the same. I have the smaller grills (early) grills and I think I might have the late (bulging) buckets. I have these trim rings that look like they should fill the gap on the grill but I can't seem to get the orientation right. Both buckets have headlight adjusters on the pax side of the ones I have.

What's the deal with the shallow vs deep early grills? What came when? I was thinking the shallow ones were the early ones.

If you still can't tell your left from right headlight buckets, drop me an e-mail. I had the same problem and after I figured out how to tell 'em apart, I included it in a column. I'll send you the pertinent part of the column.

As for grilles: the difference is in the depth of the headlight surrounds on the grille. On the shallow bucket (mid 72 or so to end of 73 production) the front to back depth of the headlight surround measured at 6 o'clock is about 1.5", while on the earlier grilles it's about 2.5" And they use different headlight retainers: symmetrical for the later grilles (same as the squarelight retainers but chrome vs black) and assymetrical for the earlier grilles.

Hope that helps...

The easiest way to tell them apart is to picture them in their installed position. The mounting panel is angled such that if the buckets had no angle to them the headlites would point outward, away from the center of the car by about 15 degrees or so. Thus the buckets are designed to correct that, if you hold them with the base perpendicular to the center line of the car, they would point inward.

Hope this helps.

Last night about 11, I figured out the PO had installed 2 right side buckets in mine. Anyone need a brand new passenger side bucket ?

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

    The BMW 2002 Production Run

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
