Update On the '73 Roundie Off eBay

Yesterday, we finally got cracking. One of the first things I wanted to tackle was the front grille. The previous owner had sprayed it black and as you can tell from the pictures, the black was chipping off and the whole thing looked terrible! So of course, we stripped it. Then we did a once over on the car and there are only minor things wrong such as hole in muffler, transmission needs a tune, the speedo is still in miles per hour and not kilometers (not saying this is a bad thing here!). There is some bubbly rust and the bottom door trim is gone. But the most important thing that is necessary that this car doesn't have is the 2002 badge! Unbelievable! So I got one from 2002AD HOPEFULLY coming because most of the time, they are out of stock even though they never tell you or list it.

This weekend is going to be a big one. Karl is getting central locking and an alarm plus a whole new set of Bilstein suspension. "Bertie" which is the new car so I will now refer to him by that name, will get his engine taken out so we can make adjustments for the M42, and I'm sure the transmission will come out too for a tune-up. Since Bertie's engine runs slightly better than Karl's and in saying this, we haven't checked the head or compression, only going by smoothness and sound, Karl will inherit this engine probably in the near future.

This is so great! Boyfriend admitted he had already been biten by the bug last night as we stripped the paint off the grille. I'm so happy I could convert him. Enjoy the pics. There is one specially for Britt who thinks I need to be in a bikini. Well, last night was hot so this was the best I could do! Of course, there are a lot more pictures than this. I had to repaint the black slats on the grille because I forgot this was a "mid" edition 2002. That took awhile and was fun to do. There's also some of me spraying and reinstalling the air cleaner in hence the final pic. But all in all, this is going to be a fun project. It reminds me of back when I started fixing up Karl. I think I might update my website with some more pictures. Check back sometime next week. I'll be pretty busy all weekend!

Seriously, where did you get that Hartge suit? I want one!

Those are the old overalls for Peak Performance. I have 3 pairs now and I get a lot of people wanting them! If you'd like, the size is probably medium to large, send me an email, and I'll consider sending you one. It's gonna be used though, so keep that in mind.

My watch came off later when boyfriend and I did some "other" work, thanks Vroomer. And no, my hands were not clean! I mean, they may look clean but they are still dirty today.

M42, yes, time and time again, you guys keep telling me it's going to be a lot of work. I shall remind you all that:

1) We have the engine

2) We have the necessary parts

3) We have a 5 speed out the back

4) We want to prove you guys wrong

It may not be as rewarding as the M10 or an S14, but at least it will be something different and seriously, if it doesn't work, no sweat. As the Haynes manual states, "removal is the same as installation".

Your 73's grilles should have the black anodized aluminum appliques on 'em--they're still available from BMW and won't chip like painting the slats will. They just glue on with contact cement.

BTW, nice find on the car--and yes, it is possible to work on an '02 without getting too dirty. But PLEASE take your watch off. I learned the hard way--I'll bet I've changed oil 100 times on 2002s, but I managed to get my metal watchband simultaneously touching the + battery terminal and the holdown bolt on the 101st time . The watchband got red hot in about .5 seconds and gave me a nasty 2nd degree burn that took a month to heal. Don't do what I did!

Well, yes, they do have the slats. They are stuck on very well and I have a feeling if we tried to get them off, they'd ruin the grille. And yes, I had a look at new chrome grilles. I think the price tag read somewhere along the lines of $295 USD for one! I'm not in any hurry to buy a brand new set. If he wants them, he'll have to start learning how to internet shop.

Still waiting for 2002AD. Anybody else ever had any problems with them?
