hypothetical insurance question

OK, wadya guys think. I removed my front bumper due to some minor repairs I am making. I know it's not legal to run in California without the bumper, but I assume it's a minor infraction. So, if I were driving without the bumper and had an accident of some kind, specifically one where the front of the car were involved, could an insurance company screw me by saying I was driving my car illegally (sans bumper)? I assume yes they could and would, but I'm curious if anyone has had this happen.

The adjuster is definitely going to take that position, and if G forbid, there is bodily injury involved, for example if you hit a pedestrian, you're even going to be in deeper trouble.
