E9 Coupe ignition lock removal?

I've got a chance of a free CS Coupe, without any keys! Does anyone have an easy way to get the sterring lock/ ignition barrel out? The design is different to '02's, I can't see any screws holding the ignition switch on, or a pin to drill for the lock barrel-and there are no numbers on any of the locks for the Pebra key! The car is not in an easily accessible place, so taking out the column isn't really an option. Any ideas?

Chances are very good that at least the passenger door lock is original...

Most locksmiths won't be able to fab that kind of key from a lock. Most have trouble even duplicating a key. See photo below.

E9 ignitions are really unruly beasts. If you're working in a cramped, dark environment, good luck. Here's an illustrated discussion of the ignition on the e9 board:

If you want a whole new ignition + key (you probably do), phone Carl Nelson at LaJolla Independent (http://www.bimmerdoc.com). He's talked lots of coupe owners through this exact problem.

I was in a similar situation, once, with a couple of '02s once, neither ran, no keys, and one the wheels were turned full lock to one side. Had to tow each one 2 hrs - took all day with the back and forth trips and the dollie rental. This was back in the good 'ol days when gas was under a dollar per gallon...

I doubt you'll want to do it, but I took the steering wheel and wrenched on it - it didn't take much - heard a *snap* and viola - no more steering lock. Of course, save it if you can, E9s are a little more uncommon for parts than '02s in backyards.

Guys, thanks for the replies, I'm gonna check the boot lock & glovebox lock for numbers maybe stamped there. The car has was stolen & recovered, and the thieves threw the keys-if I can move it, I can have it, so I think a little effort will be rewarded! I'll let you know-though I don't know how I'm goign to hide it on the drive with 3 '02's & a Triumph already there!

i had to replace the ignition switch in my csi and although it was some years ago now, i dont remember it being too much trouble. like many things on these old cars it just takes a bit of time and patience. i'm recalling that there's a headless grub screw in there somewhere holding the whole assembly in. all the parts were still available new when i did the job about 6 years ago. good luck. a cs for free is not to be sniffed at!
