Door panel trim

Recommended Posts

I pulled the mylar tape off my doors today and cleaned up the glue residue (3M Tar and Adhesive remover) taped it all off and shot it with Krylon Fusion spray can. It is formulated for plastic and has a satisfactory metal flake type finish. If you do this, I'd suggest a very light coat. It doesn't shine like chrome but it is better than the mylar...unless you are a real artist with mylar.

I've considered the paint method myself.Any photos of the results. This could be the solution to door re-furb w/o new M.T. panels.

Thanks

better yet, visit your local auto parts store and look for the plastic shrome, stick on side moulding....the narrow stuff is the same width as the door strips and this shines like the original did or more so....it won't chip, crack or scratch off..

you can buy the wider for the larger section and cut the appropriate angles to mesh the 2 together

it's self adhesive by 3m....i did mine but don't have any pic's handy right now...no masking off, cleaning overspray, etc

*Esty-Photos and tips when you have a minute please*I was glad to hear about the paint method, thought it might be easier than the mylar type poo poo. I'm concerned would peel deteriorate in no time.I just don't want to spring for new door panels.

i'll try to remember to take some pic's tomorrow...it's the easiest thing in the world to do...just lay it out to the proper length, mark the angle with your fingernail, etc, cut it with a razor knife, peel the paper off the adhesive strip and stick over the old piece

i've used this stuff in different applications on several other cars in the past and so far, knock on wood, even on exterior applications, i've not had a failure

it's not actually a 3m label'd product...but the paper strip on the back side, over the adhesive strip says. "adhesive by 3m"

i've seen it in practically every auto parts store i've been in....pep boys, autozone, carquest, etc...

the package contains 20 feet and sells for under $10.00 for the narrow

peel the paper off the adhesive strip and stick over the old piece

I've considered this in the past, but had a couple of concerns:

1. Stickiness - sounds like the 3m backing is good stuff?

2. Does the extra profile interfere with the window winder handle?

Love to see some pics of the finished job!

you shouldn't be concern'd about either....it's very difficult to peel off & the adhesive gets stronger with time, the grip is superior and it doesn't interfere with door handles or window cranks...it's fairly thin stuff

i used it around my wheel well openings before this restoration and it stuck for more than 10 years and was actually difficult to remove

a tip though... get it right the 1st time, once stuck down, if immediately removed, it loses some of it's strength

look at the drivers side of my grill...i used it around the outside and on the "chrome" slats in the middle...the right hand side is painted...you'll notice a definite difference in appearance and shine and it's extremely flexible stuff

Sorry, no photos, but I would give it a try. The biggest problem is getting the adhesive off where the mylar was. 3M and q-tips. It is not a chrome color but it is consistent and looks about a million times better than the mylar . It is a metal flake light gray. Works for me and was short money.
