Speedo Cable removal?

Recommended Posts

Last night I pulled the transmission from the '73 and I was able to remove the cable from the tranny okay, but I can't seem to figure out how to get the cable out of the car? Both ends are too big to fit through the hole in the firewall. Is there something I can remove from either end without destroying it?

unfortunatey the '72 I'm rebuilding doesn't have the speedo cable in it so this is the only one I have...

Thanks..

The rubber gromet stays with the cable. Just use a screwdriver and pull it to the inside of the car. I don't think the end that attached to the gauge (behind the dash) will fit through the hole.

Thanks! I was able to get the grommet through the hole but the threaded housing that goes to the speedo itself won't fit. I also tried to pull it through from the inside and that end also doesn't fit. Do you have to cut the hole a bit larger to get it through?

Thanks!

pull the cable into the passenger compartment from the engine compartment. Take a look at the pics. This is an Automatic Cable but I have to assume that the hole in the firewall is the same diameter...

There should be no issues... it should just pull right in?? If not post some pix of where you're having the issue. Also what car is this again? Normal 2002? early? late? 4-spd?

Thanks again! Okay, it was pretty late when I got to pulling the cable, but I messed around with it for about 30 min and could get it out :(

It's a 5 speed installed into a '73 tii... I plan on heading over later today to work on the car, if I can't get it through I'll post some pics.

I'm probably missing something here, like the end the goes into the tranny?? It does look different than yours. It has the plug attached that has a o-ring on it where it goes into the tranny... Does that come of???

Thanks..

You pulled the drive gear housing out of the tranmission. Pull the housing off the transmission end of the cable and it should look like the pics above. No big deal to put the housing back in the tranny.
