Flywheel question..

Recommended Posts

I searched the archives, and there is a lot of info, but there is one thing I am not clear about. When the flywheel is removed is there a special way to reinstall the wheel so that the engine timing is not affected? What I mean...Is there a special order to the bolts that must be followed when reattching the flywheel??? DOes a bolt hole on the flywheel correspond to a certain bolt hole on the block??? I hope this makes sense...

Thanks,

Brian

The bolt holes on my flywheel are spaced slightly different, so that it can only be installed in one position. I just had to rotate it until the holes all lined up.

Edit: Mine has the pin too, see below. Sorry if I confused you. The "pin" is a sleeve that fits pressed into the crank, and slides into one of the bolt holes. In any case, it only fits one way.

Check out the bolt pattern on the engine side of the flywheel. There is a metal dowel that sticks into the crank so you can't mess it up. It only goes on one way...... Good thinking those Germans!

First pic shows the motor side of the flywheel (Look at the direction of the bolts) and you should see that dowel pin on your flywheel sticking out of one of the holes where the arrow points to. There's only one hole on the crank big enough to accept the pin.

Second pic... it's got the pilot bearing and the dowel pin circled - #13

HTH...

Keep us posted!

EDIT: It's not that there is different spacing as that would throw off the balance, it's the dowel pin. Sometimes it's removed so just look at the holes carefully. If you have to put the calipers to work and find the bigger hole... trust me it's there

Thanks again Tom!

ANother question...

Does anyone know what these VW flywheel locks look like? We've got 2 VW shops here in town and I thought I'd pick one up if available. I looked in the archives and a couple of people said they are about $10. I went online and searched and found all sorts of things.... Check this link below...I was thinking it was this one since the price was right..

any thoughts?

There's about 30 different variations but that looks about right. They are worth every penny! I've been using a small Craftsman flat head stubby like this but I always worry about breaking off one tooth on the ring gear.... just too lazy to go out and buy the flywheel lock.

The stubby screwdriver fits right up under the VIN stamp and wedges nicely on a tooth down near the meaty part, not up near the tip...

Get the flywheel lock though it'll be worth it

Yup.. I have the identical tool and it works perfectly with the exception of the bolt that they give you... it's not long enough for where I mounted it so I replaced it with a 'starter' bolt I had.
